CDS Middle School
Weekly Newsletter
May 17th, 2019
From the Director
Dear CDS Community,
We've had such an active week at CDS Middle School! I'm very proud of the effort and focus students put into their MAP tests. I expect the results will show evidence of considerable student growth over the course of the 2018-19 school year. We will be sending home MAP progress reports the last week in May.
On Thursday, students in all middle school grades supported the 7th and 8th graders by participating in the SDL Showcase dress rehearsal. This was a great chance for SDL students to get feedback on their work, and make small improvements before the big event on Tuesday evening! I want to thank all the parents who have RSVPed to the SDL Evening Showcase . It looks like we will have a large audience for our hard working 7th and 8th grade students.
The week finished with a fantastic 6th and 8th grade field trip to the Incheon Student Science Museum. Students had a great time while strengthening their understanding of the physical world.
Final Exams: With only three weeks of school left CDS Middle School students and teachers are determined to finish strong! I've included a link to the Term 5 final exam schedule below. Exams will take place on May 27th, 28th, and 29th. It's very important that all students make it to school on exam days. 5th and 6th grade students will follow the regular bell schedule, except on the 27th when they take their World Language final.
I look forward to seeing many of you at the SDL Showcase on Tuesday evening.
Have a great weekend!

Director of Middle School

SDL Evening Showcase
Dear CDS Community,
CDS cordially invites parents, students, teachers, and community members to attend our first annual Self Determined Learning (SDL) Evening Showcase Event.
안녕하세요, 여러분! 기쁜 마음으로 제1 회 Self Determined Learning (SDL) Evening Showcase Event에 학부모님, 학생 그리고 교사 여러분을 초대합니다.
This will be a very special evening celebrating the time, effort, and hard work our 7th and 8th graders have put into their Self Determined Learning course during the second half of the school year. Students will be exhibiting their work, and giving TEDx style presentations on a variety of meaningful topics.
By showing up, you are playing a significant role in their learning by being an "authentic audience." Research shows that students are more committed to their work when it will be shared with others. As such, we encourage you to come out and show your support.
Food and drink will be provided. Please RSVP below in order for event organizers to properly plan for food/space purposes.

The 2nd Dalton Soiree
The Student Council continues to work hard to preparing for the 2nd Annual Dalton Soiree on Friday, May 31st.
This year's theme is Startstruck. Sophia Seo, our Student Council President says she "...hopes that it gives the middle schoolers an opportunity to relax and build community after they take their finals and finish up their schoolwork at the end of the year". Students are still able to purchase tickets from their student council representatives next week!

CEMC Math Contest
The contest is for grades 7th and 8th grade but it was open to the lower grades as well. It was an opportunity for students to have fun and to enrich their mathematical problem-solving ability.
The format is 25 multiple-choice questions with 60 minutes to complete them. The contest starts off at an easy level with problems such as: "Find the value of (4-3) x 2" and quickly works its way up to tricky algebra and geometry concepts. We look forward to receiving the results and are proud of these students for trying! If you would like more information about CEMC please follow this link.

2018-19 MS Athletic Banquet
The 4th Annual CDS Athletic Banquet was a great success! This year, we saw a record number of students in attendance as nearly 84% of all students that participated on a Middle School sports team were present!
The evening got started with a bang as students bustled into the Phoenix Cafe and were greeted with tables set with elegant flowers and placemats, and a buffet of lasagna, salad, and of course everyone's favorite, barbecued steak! There were even two giant sports themed cakes for desert! Coaches teared up when seeing the hard work the students had committed to preparing thank you cards and autographed team photos for each and every one of them.
After the feast was complete, students were ushered into Dalton Hall were the Awards Ceremony began. After a rousing speech by Middle School Director Mr. Scoville, the ceremony was underway and teams were called up to the stage one-by-one and awarded certificates for team Scholar-Athlete, Most Improved Player, and Most Valuable Player. Team captains drew raffle tickets from the Dalton Cup to give away special prizes!
Thanks to the combined efforts of the MS Parent Volunteers and HS Athletic Council, we were able to raise over 750,000 KRW for the Athletic Banquet prize giveaways! In the end, 6 major awards were bestowed upon our most prestigious athletes. The Badminton team won the Team of the Year Award, Eddie Koh and Yuchien Chang won the Scholar-Athlete of the Year awards for the boys and girls divisions, Siyoon Kim and Erica Jeon won Sportsman and Sportswoman of the year respectively, and Han Na Shin won the Lil' Phoenix Award! After recognizing the graduating 8th graders, the ceremony came to a close and all participants drifted into the night with a belly full of steak, some new hardware in their hands, and without a doubt, smiles on their faces! Thanks to all for making this year's Athletic Banquet the best one ever!

Field Trip to the Incheon Student Science Museum
Students visited the museum's planetarium, viewed physics simulations, examined minerals and fossil specimens, observed the aquarium, and enjoyed a range of other exhibits. It was a great bonding experience for 6th and 8th grade houses and a relevant way to bring the science make science collaborative and interactive!
