Woodland Elementary School
Weekly Update for the week of January 18 - January 22
These last few weeks have been very busy at Elementary as we continue planning and preparing the building for students to return in our Hybrid Model. Please continue to check your emails for updates from Dr. Casey and our Board of Education as they continue to review metrics and plan for our return to learn. As a reminder, our next Board of Education meeting is Thursday, January 28.
Included in this email are resources to aid parents in the upcoming MAP Screeners that students will be completing next week. The tests are in Reading and Math and are 20 questions in length. The goal of this test is not a "good grade" but an honest assessment of which areas individual students may need more support or could use further enrichment. It's important that students take their time and try their hardest so that we can get an accurate measure and continue to best serve the needs of each student. Your child's teacher will share when your child will test and although you are not required to help with the testing setup it is certainly helpful for our staff.
In looking ahead, we have scheduled our next Supply Pick up for the week of February 1 at Elementary. More detailed information will be forthcoming but we wanted to share the dates so families can prepare in advance. There is no school on Monday in observance of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and we look forward to seeing our students on Tuesday. Enjoy the 3-day weekend!
Sincerely,
Ryan Wollberg

MAP Testing the week of January 18
The MAP screener assessment is different from the typical MAP Growth Assessment (we typically take) in that it is only 20 questions and therefore takes our students less time to complete but it is still computer-based and students will take the assessment online. Again, more information from Teaching and Learning and myself will come next week but we wanted to let everyone know for planning purposes for the week of January 18. Due to assessment please also note that there may be some services that may need to be rescheduled.

Social Emotional Resources
In light of recent events, please see below for some resources on how to talk to your child about the events of this past week
This week we will look at the resources circled in the visual. If you missed it last week, please first click on the link on the whiteboard to find a letter explaining the calming corner and offering the contact information for your student’s school social worker. Next, click on the image of the Zones of Regulation poster to be taken to a document with a series of visuals that help teach students about the emotions that belong to each zone and the calming strategies students can use based on the zone they are in. For more information about the Zones of Regulation, please reach out to your student’s school social worker.
Please also take a few minutes to explore the different resources found on the bookshelf. You will find a variety of videos demonstrating breathing strategies, yoga routines, and mindfulness practices that will help students be ready to learn. Have some fun while practicing these! It is best to practice calming strategies when students are regulated so they are familiar when a student is struggling with strong emotions.
If you have any questions about the virtual calming corner or the resources available, please don’t hesitate to contact your student’s teacher or social worker!
