PTA Meeting: Wednesday, January 9th

Join us in the OPE media center for a very important PTA meeting. This month we will have Assistant United States Attorney April Russo here to discuss Project Safe Childhood with us. This initiative is focused on protecting and rescuing victims of child exploitation.

Ms. Russo will discuss different websites that defendants use to find children, the methods used to deceive children into engaging in conversation and other activity, discuss sextortion, talk about some of the recent cases her office has seen, provide some tips to keep our kids safe, and end with a Q & A period.

This is an intimidating topic but we feel it is so important to be well informed as our kids grow up in this digital world. Even if your kids are not currently active on social media or the internet, it is still vital to know how to keep them safe as they get older.

In a 2013 national sting on child sex trafficking, Detroit was second highest of 76 cities for victims recovered. The youngest was 9 years old. Hopefully this will never affect our families but knowledge is power.

We will also be visited by a representative from Hospitality House food pantry in Commerce with information on how we can help those in need of support in our community.

Childcare will be available during the meeting. Please contact us at OakleyParkPTA@gmail.com with any questions.

20th Annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration 2019

The Walled Lake Consolidated School District invites the community to the 20th annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day Celebration on Monday, Jan. 21, 2018 at Walled Lake Northern High School. The evening's events will include a Multicultural Dinner from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m. and an exhibition of student artwork from 5 p.m. to 6:15 p.m. The program will begin at 6:15 p.m., and will also include performances by student choirs, presentations by several students, and recognition of this year’s Alec Bender Friend of Diversity Award recipients. This year’s theme is “Heroes in the Community: Women Making a Difference”. This year’s MLK Day Celebration is made possible thanks to generous donations from the PTA/PTSA groups from across our district, the Walled Lake Education Association, the Walled Lake School Administrators Association, the Walled Lake Schools Federal Credit Union, and the Meemic Insurance Company. This event is free and open to the entire community.

2019-2020 WLCSD Calendar is now available!

Walled Lake Schools is happy to release the 2019-20 calendar to you prior to the winter break in hopes that you can plan for the many events, travel and activities in the busy life of your family. We will start the school year prior to Labor Day again in 2019-20. Also, you may notice the late start at the middle schools and early release at the high schools have been eliminated. There are several half-days throughout the school year. The afternoons on these dates will be used for staff professional development as part of ongoing school improvement efforts. As we have in the past, we will offer a reduced rate Prime Time Care service on each of these half days. We will seek feedback from you on the calendar in the spring parent survey.
