NEW: Eight Things to Know for January, February 3
Dear MCPS Community,
Here are the eight things you need to know for Thursday, Feb. 3, 2022. They include the possibility of transitioning to virtual instruction on inclement weather days, an update on schools entering a 10-day virtual learning period, upcoming surveys for the antiracist audit, information about tutoring services and more.
Inclement Weather Virtual Learning Approved
MCPS will consider transitioning to synchronous virtual learning when school buildings are closed due to inclement weather. These are days when the district would otherwise determine that a system closure without instruction would be needed for safety reasons. The Board of Education approved this plan on Feb. 1, and virtual instruction days count towards the minimum required days of instruction under Maryland law. Learn more here:NO MCPS Schools Entering 10-Day Virtual Learning Period
No additional schools have been identified as needing to transition to virtual learning for next week. MCPS will continue to monitor the impact of COVID-19 on school operations and, if necessary, identify schools for temporary virtual learning in the future. The four schools currently in remote learning, Harmony Hills ES, A. Mario Loiederman MS, Pine Crest ES, Wheaton Woods ES and the autism program at Westover ES will return to in-person learning on Feb. 10.Antiracist Audit Surveys Coming in March
MCPS has been actively reviewing its policies and practices through its Antiracist System Audit. Over the past few months, staff have met with students, families, staff and community members to get input on the audit and to hear concerns and questions. The next phase will include surveys and focus groups with our stakeholders. More information is available here. Other key details to know about the audit include that:- The audit IS a comprehensive, district-wide review of our practices and policies. Read about the different areas of the audit.
- The audit IS about fact-finding. Action will be determined based on the results of the audit.
- The audit IS NOT about pointing fingers. We will not condone the blaming or shaming of anyone, or any group, for the actions of others.
The next phase will include surveys and focus groups with our stakeholders. More information is available here.
Creating Safe and Equitable Schools
Following the incident of gun violence at Col. Zadok Magruder High School last month, MCPS is conducting a thorough review of safety and security in all schools. Teams are working to:- Set a vision for the safety, security and well-being of students and staff
- Develop proactive practices to support equitable school environments that promote social, emotional, and psychological safety
- Conduct a thorough review of the current Montgomery County Police Community Engagement Officer (CEO) program and MCPS’ current safety and security staffing, structures and processes
- Review the mental and emotional health services MCPS provides, and
- Review the Joint Incident Command Structure that ensures appropriate and immediate response by MCPS central office, schools and local law enforcement during emergencies
Free, On-Demand Online Tutoring Available for Students in Grades K-12
All students now have access to free tutoring and 24/7 homework help to support success in their current courses/grade level, through two new tutoring providers: FEV Tutor and Tutor Me Education. All students have access to these virtual tutoring services through their MCPS Google account, using Clever. Some students will also be referred directly by their local school. Learn more about online tutoring.In-School Vaccination Clinics Will Be Held on Feb. 5 and 6
MCPS is partnering with the county’s Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) and Care For Your Health to offer a number of free vaccination clinics for children at schools and county sites. To see available sites and to register visit this website.

The Board of Education is seeking comments on proposed amendments to Board Policy JGA, Student Discipline, to provide a philosophy of behavior intervention that is rehabilitative, restorative, educational and implemented fairly and equitably with clear, appropriate and consistent expectations and consequences to address student behavior in violation of the Student Code of Conduct in MCPS. Learn more and provide your feedback.Spectator Limitations Adjusted at MCPS Extracurricular Events

NEW: MCPS Community Message from Dr. McKnight
Dear MCPS Community,
We are writing to provide an update on our district’s ongoing work and commitment to address racial barriers in MCPS.
The truth is, talking about race is hard. School districts around the country have been struggling to engage in these conversations as community members pick sides and point fingers. Yet, we cannot avoid talking about race in MCPS because our data, recent experiences, and the disparities of how COVID-19 affected the community won’t allow us.
With this need in mind, last year we began a review of our district policies and practices called the Antiracist System Audit. Over the past few months, we have met with students, families, staff, and community members to get input on the audit and to hear concerns and questions. Some of you said that the audit goes beyond the scope of what a school district should be doing. Others told us that we are not going far enough. Gaining trust will take time, so we want to explain what we believe the audit is and is not.
- The audit IS a comprehensive and district-wide review of our practices and policies. Click here to read about the different areas of the audit.
- The audit IS about fact-finding. Action will be determined based on the results of the audit.
- The audit IS NOT about pointing fingers. We will not condone the blaming or shaming of anyone, or any group, for the actions of others.
The next phase of the audit is to hear from all our stakeholders through surveys and focus groups. Please see the graphic to the right for information about student, staff, and family surveys as well as upcoming community conversations. Please be on the lookout for additional communication with more details. Findings from the audit will be shared with the entire community by June 2022 and all MCPS schools and offices will create action plans this summer. Action updates will be publicized on this webpage.
It is not lost on us that we write this letter from the MCPS’ headquarters in the Carver Educational Services Center building. This historical place used to be the school where every Black high school student from across Montgomery County needed to attend regardless of where they lived. This fact reminds us that racism was built into our core structures. However, we are sitting in this building as leaders of a district that is now one of the most diverse and successful in the country. We are hopeful that we can use this audit to re-envision a school district where all students, families, and staff feel safe, valued, seen, heard, and successful.
Sincerely,
Dr. Monifa B. McKnight
Interim Superintendent
Montgomery County Public Schools

REMINDER: Common Sense Media Program
Now in 2022, realistic expectations and understanding of the impact of technology use is important for all families. Our students are tech savvy but still need direction and practice making positive choices with technology and social media. Whether they are 8 years old or 18 years old, finding a way to connect and check-in on a regular basis about technology use, screen time, actions online, and overall social media access and use is important.
Common Sense Media has several tools available to support families and students on having conversations. This is a link to the Family Media Agreement: https://www.commonsense.org/education/sites/default/files/tlr-asset/document-common-sense-family-media-agreement.pdf Please take a moment to review and adjust to your families’ needs. Students will receive a variety of lessons on these topics through the school year in 9th and 10th grade. If you have any questions or would like more resources, please reach out to our media specialist at Northwest High School, Ms. Autumn Myers.
In addition to a Family Media Agreement, here are links to some tip sheets in English and Spanish to support families in having important, ongoing conversations about digital citizenship. Links below.
