Final Newsletter for This School Year

We have come to the end of another school year. The 2015 - 2016 year has been an amazing year in many ways. To be honest, it has had its ups and downs; but added to the mix were the excited faces of our students when accomplishments were made and challenges overcome.

This year would not have been the success it has been without some very special individuals. A very special THANK YOU needs to be extended to our principal, Mrs. Altmeyer, our office staff, Mrs. Michel and Mrs. Buening, our school nurse, Mrs. Heichelbech, all of the Southridge Middle School teachers and assistants, the cafeteria staff, coaches, and the maintenance staff. Without these dedicated individuals, our school could not and would not be as amazing as it is. Please take time to thank each and every one of these important individuals.

Library News

Each year Indiana nominates a variety of books for its Young Hoosier Book Awards. These books are nominated in three categories: Picture Books, Intermediate, and Middle Grades. These books were given a designated space on our library shelves. Any student who read at least 5 books in one category was then given the opportunity to vote on his or her favorite book in that category. This year Southridge Middle School had two categories, Intermediate and Middle School.

On Wednesday, May 11, the library hosted a pizza party for 20 sixth and seventh graders who accomplished this feat. Each student also received a certificate of achievement. One student, Maddy Lau, was also given special recognition because she read 15 Young Hoosier Books over the course of the school year. Way to go, Maddy!

The students who participated this year were: Rosita Ayala, Lydia Ramsey, Maddy Songer, Vivian Barco, Maddy Lau, Tessa Wylucki, Charlotte Moss, Kelby Laroche, Denver Wright, Max Rasche, Matthew Altmeyer, Michael Bonifer, Emma Marley, Mackenzie Schepers, Mekhi Payne, Shelby Phillips, Emily Roby, Austin Hayes, Laci Schwenk, and Audrianna Craig. We are very proud of these students and their love of reading!

Mission Statement

SMS sets high expectations while striving for excellence academically, physically, and socially through the combined efforts of students, staff, and family to prepare students to reach their potential in a diverse, ever-changing society.

Music Department Fundraiser

The Southridge Music Department will once again hold its "Mattress Fundraiser" on Saturday, June 11, 2016 from 10:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. Floor models will be on display in the Southridge Middle School Gym.

Name brand mattresses ( Simmons, Restonic, Wellsville Mattress ) will be sold at up to 50% below retail prices. These are top quality mattresses with full factory warranties. All sizes and prize ranges are available. Delivery is also available.

Proceeds from this fundraiser will benefit both the Southridge band and choir programs.

8th Grade Civil War Projects

Below are pictures of some of the Civil War Projects made by Mr. Ohanian's eight grade social studies classes. As you can see, the students put in a great deal of time and effort in producing these displays.

Southridge Senior Walk Through

On Monday, May 16, 2016, The senior class of Southridge High School held a walk through at each of the schools in the Southwest School District. The seniors were divided into groups with each group being assigned a separate building: Holland Elementary, Huntingburg, Elementary, Southridge Middle School, or Southridge High School. The main idea of the walk through was to honor these students and to show the rest of the student body that hard work and dedication can pay off. Congratulations to the Class of 2016.

In Closing...

The end of the year is always an exciting time for the students. Who doesn't remember the feeling of no more school and homework for two whole months? Our eighth graders will be moving on to the high school; some openly admitting that they are scared to death while others can't wait.

The end of this year will also bring changes to Southridge Middle School. Mrs. Annette Altmeyer will be leaving her position here as principal and re-entering the teaching field. Thank you, Mrs. Altmeyer, for your dedication to the students and staff of Southridge Middle School. Your long hours and hard work did not go unnoticed.

Mrs. Denise Thompson will be retiring at the end of this year also. Enjoy your retirement and know that the students, whose lives you have touched, will miss you also.

And finally, Mrs. Marcia Messmer will also not be returning to our ranks next year. Enjoy your new found freedom in whatever your future holds.

From the bottom of my heart, I would like to say THANK YOU for your friendships, your patience, and your dedication to the jobs you have done and the people you have touched.

So long, farewell ....
