Testing! Testing! Read All About it!

Tomorrow and Thursday are our last days of testing. (If your child was absent on a testing day they will do make-ups Wednesday and Friday of this week.) Thank you for your support at home with sending in headphones, assuring lots of sleep and a good breakfast. If you would like to send a bigger snack on testing days please do. Snacks with protein are always a good idea for heavy brainwork.

Math: Our main focus this week is to help students to feel confident for the math assessment. Today we used their favorite review tool: Kahoot! Students had a great time using this quiz tool to review skills we have learned this year. I will be playing it day by day depending on the kids' stamina and the amount of time that we have. Our next goal is to finish Unit 7 so that we can take the Unit 7 assessment.

Social Studies: We jumped into our studies of Asia last week. I will send home information about the Asia project later this week.

Reading: Students are working through reader’s workshop books and assignments on non-testing days. They have been practicing writing summaries of their text and began their self-selected vocabulary assignment for the unit today

Writing: I chose to wait until next week to begin our 4th and final writing unit called “The Literary Essay” which focuses on writing about our reading. This week, we will work through a non-fiction article in our Storyworks Magazine about the final voyage of the Lusitania in 1915. Today we watched a short video of the author describing her writing process with a special focus on editing. Later in the week, we will read through the article paying special attention to the descriptive language she uses – a skill we’ve focused a great deal on as authors this year.
