Countdown to Christmas

Bruin Press December 10, 2019 Edition

Dear Parents and Guardians,

During this Advent Season, students and staff in our school have been enthusiastically preparing for the birth of our Savior, Jesus Christ. Our faith traditions help us to think about Jesus’ humble birth in a manger. We continually work together to provide all members of our learning community with opportunities to reflect on the true meaning of Christmas. We are reminded to keep Christ close to us for He is our strength throughout our lives.

At SBS, I am happy to say that our students proudly display their faith in action on a daily basis. Whether it is by singing in Mass, organizing canned food drives and clothing collections for those most vulnerable, volunteering time at a nursing home, or celebrating the Eucharist, our students demonstrate the true meaning of the season.

Thank you for choosing a Catholic education for your child and for choosing St. Bernard. Thank you for your continued support, loyalty, and dedication to our mission. Thank you for your generosity in volunteering, for always being available, and answering the call to serve. Your support of our school is a blessing that allows our students and staff to grow in the love of Christ.

It is a privilege to serve you and I thank you for your support as we move into the New Year. May the spirit of Christmas fill your hearts and homes with peace and joy as you rejoice in our Savior’s birth. I wish you and your family a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

With love,

Laurie Senecal

For a child has been born for us, a son given to us;
authority rests upon his shoulders; and he is named
Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father,
Prince of Peace.” (Isaiah 9:6)

Carrie Guerrero - PreK 4

Ms. Guerrero is a native Texan. Born and raised in Dallas, she has had the privilege of attending Catholic schools her entire schooling years. She went to St. Elizabeth of Hungary from 1st – 7th grade, Bishop Dunne High School from 8th – 12th grade, and Dominican University of California in Northern California for college. She always knew that she wanted to be a teacher, but before she became a teacher she was a flight attendant with a major airline. Although she has had interesting careers and experiences, she would have to say that being a teacher has been the most rewarding.

“The wonderful teachers, and schools that I had the opportunity to work with have helped me grow as an educator and provided me with the tools needed in order to be successful. Being an effective teacher is an art that takes time and devotion. I cherish the time I have spent with ALL my students, faculty, families, as well as the St. Bernard Community."

Special Note: Ms. Guerrero celebrated her birthday yesterday (December 9th). Happy Birthday, and Blessings for the upcoming year, Ms. Guerrero!

What is the most interesting place to which you have traveled? Even though I have traveled to many beautiful places, I would have to say San Francisco is one of the most beautiful, interesting, and diverse cities I have had the fortune of living in. My roots may be in Dallas, but my heart belongs to San Francisco!

What famous person would you like to meet some day? The Pope

Do you have a bucket list item you would like to share? My bucket list wish would be to trek across Spain and follow Alejandro Saenz, attending all his concerts (Spanish musician, writer and composer).

Boys Varsity Basketball

The Boys Varsity will compete in the Holy Trinity Shoot Out Tournament this weekend. Their first game is Friday, Dec. 13th at 7 PM at Holy Trinity Catholic School. Go Bruins!

Girls Varsity Basketball

The Girls Varsity team competed in the Holy Trinity Shoot Out Tournament last weekend, winning their first two games against St. Monica-White and Santa Clara, and moving on to the semi-finals. Unfortunately, they lost the next two games, but it was a great experience for the girls. Thanks to all who came out to support them!

Week 16

Students returned from Thanksgiving break ready for the final 3 weeks of school; many middle school students have been preparing for semester finals. On Thursday, we had a visitor from Italy; Fr. Andrea said the school Mass and enjoyed posing for pictures with all the students. Thursday afternoon, parents and visitors were delighted by the performance of our young Shakespeare Club actors and actresses. And on Friday, students participated in an all-school Advent retreat, with fun activities, ornament making, a skit, and Adoration, in joyful preparation for the upcoming Christmas season. Meanwhile, students continued to bring in cans for the canned food drive, creating an ever-growing pyramid of generosity.
