Scott 6th Grade Center's Motto- "We Enter to Learn and Leave to Achieve"
What Has Been Happening in Mrs. Davenport's Classes?
The students in Ms. Davenport’s class focus on their math skills as soon as they walk in the door with a warmup that reviews a mixture of skills, we have covered this year. Some students enjoy the chance to go to the board and solve the problems. Next, we look at Spring Math, our intervention program, that help students close learning gaps to become more successful in math. Students are learning very quickly that it helps to know their multiplication facts; it helps them to solve the problems quicker and that is important since this work is timed.
This week students were working on dividing fractions. Students learned that if they can multiply fractions, they can divide fractions. With one flip of the divisor, it is a multiplication problem. Some students have moved on to dividing mixed fractions and discovered those too are like multiplying mixed fractions. Now they are getting familiar with flipping whole numbers and mixed numbers to turn a division problem into a multiplication problem.
Students then practice the skills they learned in IXL to become more proficient. It warms my heart to see the beaming smiles on students faces when they have mastered a skill, and they want to show me. They know they have worked hard, and I am very proud of them.
Social Media Concerns Addressed with Students This Week
We were made aware of a TikTok account using Scott Middle School's name. This account contains disrespectful and unkind posts. We immediately reached out to our CASD police department and spoke to our student body. The police are currently working on getting the account taken down.
I am happy to report that no new posts have occured since we spoke to the student body and 31 followers left the account. We are planning an assembly in January to discuss the dangers of Social Media with our student body again.
Please read the letter below from our Chief of School District Police, Officer Frank Galbraith.
Dear Parents,
I am writing to advise you of a few concerns that we have regarding students’ use of social media.
We have been made aware of students using social media to be persistently unkind to other students over social media platforms such as Snapchat, Instagram, Discord, and Tik Tok. We understand that this has included both sharing inappropriate comments about students and sharing inappropriate images or memes of the students. This leads to upset students within the school and is not in line with our ethics or values.
Current laws such as Cyber harassment of a child, can be used to protect individuals from malicious and threatening posts made on the internet. All necessary action will be taken to deal with any material posted on such sites that is in our opinion distressing, alarming, or harassing or in any way breaches the rights of the members of our school community.
Most Social media apps are for students 13 years and over. If you do allow your child to access social media, we ask for your vigilance. Just like their interactions in person, online interactions require supervision and support. What is right will vary from family to family but some strategies that are known to be successful include:
Monitoring your students’ phone for the apps that are downloaded.
Enacting parental controls on phones and consoles.
Reviewing the messages, they send on platforms and apps – making monitoring part of a daily
or weekly routine.
Setting expectations about what space (preferably communal) and times they have access to
Devices.
Encouraging them to share or discuss with you what they are doing.
I hope that you understand and appreciate our position on such matters and that you will support us by speaking with your students.
Should you have any questions, you can reach our office by emailing police@casdschools.org, or by calling 484-784-9118.
Thank you for your continued support.

Student of the Month for November: Tre'Zaun Fosque
We had numerous students nominated this month, which is a wonderful problem to have! After much debate, our winner for November's Student of the Month is...Tre'Zaun Fosque!
Tre'Zaun earned 3 golden tickets during the month of November and many teachers reached out to support his nomination. Here is what they had to say: Tre'Zaun works really hard - he is never goofing around in class. Tre'Zaun does a great job in class. LOVE Tre-Zaun Fosque!
Congratulations, Tre'Zaun, we are so proud of you. Keep up the great work!
November's Employee of the Month: Mrs. Glackman
We want to congratulate our Employee of the Month for November, Mrs. Glackman. Mrs. Glackman goes above and beyond for the students in our classrooms and does not hesitate to step in and assist when needed. I can not speak highly enough of her help, dedication and professionalism each and every day. She is very welcoming to our new team members in the building. She is solution driven, is always willing to help, and is a safe person and strong advocate for not only her students but all students. Mrs. Glackman makes an effort to always be in the halls and is great at keeping track of how her students are doing in other classes. She always has a smile on her face and strives to see the positive in everything.
Congratulations, Mrs. Glackman! You are an asset to our Scott team!
We also want to congratulate our runners up: Ms. Deon, Ms. Almarez, and Nurse Keenan. All three staff members were given a gift card to treat themselves at Dunkin Donuts. We have an amazing team here at Scott!
Caught Being Good Award from Officer Irizarry: Jordan Mayo
Our School Resource Officer, Officer Brian Irizarry, presented his "Caught Being Good" award to Jordan Mayo last Tuesday. Jordan has improved the most out of all of our Scott students on IXL since the September benchmark. Since September, Jordan has improved his score by 190 points. To help you grasp what an achievement this is, 100 points is equatable to 1 school year! Jordan has been working very hard, and is making great strides in his Math performance. Keep up the great work, Jordan. We are very proud of you!
