ORCHARD DRIVE ELEMENTARY
WE TAKE PRIDE IN OUR TRIBE
WILSON'S WORDS
Dear Orchard Family,
Our number one priority is to keep your children safe; therefore we are always working on ways to continuously improve.
Each school year we review our emergency drills at least three times. The emergency drills that we practice are; fire, earthquake, tornado, and intruder. The Jackson Fire Department came to Orchard on October 16th and we were able to evacuate the entire school in about 2 1/2 minutes. We participated in the Great Central U.S. Shake Out on October 18th and plan to partake in a State-wide Tornado Drill in early spring. Both of these are in addition to the other scheduled drills. With these drills, our students and staff are well informed on the procedures to follow in emergency situations.
Our teachers and staff members have received training on intruder response. We work with our local authorities on simulated response situations specific to our building as well. Role playing scenarios offer hands on, valuable learning experiences.
Response to a major emergency is also included in safety plans for teachers and staff. We will practice procedures in early spring. This will allow our safety teams (first aid, search and rescue, assembly area, site safety, extended care, and command) to experience procedures and will teach students how to assemble in such an event.
If you have any questions regarding safety procedures, please feel free to call or visit with me any time.
Enjoy your November!
Shanna Wilson, Principal
ACADEMIC DISTINCTION
This year at Orchard Drive Elementary, 3rd and 4th graders have the opportunity to earn Academic Distinction for semester 1 and semester 2. To attain this status, a student must have a 3.5 average on their report card. We will then have the list of students' names published in the newspaper at the end of each semester.
SIMMONS' SCOOP
Dear Families,
I really can’t believe that we are already having fall parties and will be celebrating Thanksgiving in a few weeks. Something that I often hear from families is how busy everyone is with so many activities at school and home. I want to share with you a tool that may help you stay on top of school activities. If you visit the Orchard Drive website located at https://www.jacksonr2schools.com/Orchard-Drive-Elementary-School/Orchard-Drive-Elementary/ and click on the calendar link located in the top right hand corner of the page you will find a very useful tool. The calendar on the website is a Google calendar. We do our very best to keep this updated with schoolwide activities going on at Orchard. If you currently use Google calendar on your phone, you can click on the blue + sign near the bottom of the page, and this will automatically add these dates to your calendar. If you do not have Google calendar, no worries, as you can always check the calendar on the website. I hope you find this calendar useful.
If you have any questions or concerns, I’d love to chat with you. I can be reached at 243-9555 or by email at jsimmons@jr2mail.org

Congratulations to Evan Ward and Nicolas Chambless for reading all 12 Mark Twain Nominee books and passing the comprehension quizzes. We're so proud of you both!
All 4th grade students were invited to join our Mark Twain Club. It is an optional reading club meant to provide children in 4th-6th grade with good literature and fun motivation to read. Students who read and pass comprehension quizzes on the required number of books are invited to special reward parties each quarter. If you have more questions about the Mark Twain Club, feel free to contact Mrs. Ticer.

NEWS FROM THE ART ROOM
As artists, we are very creative people and can make masterpieces out of just about anything! The art room will happily accept ANY items that can be recycled into an exciting new art object. If there is a remote possibility we can do something with it, then send it! If we can’t use it, we will recycle it, find someone who can use it, or lovingly toss it. A big THANK YOU to all of the parents and students who have donated items to the art room!
Also, I will be publishing your child’s artwork on ARTSONIA throughout the year. You will be notified via email from Artsonia when a new piece is published. If you are not a registered parent on the Artsonia website, your child’s artwork will be hidden from view, so please register if you haven’t. Please encourage family and friends to check out our school art gallery at www.artsonia.com (Just type in Orchard Drive Elementary in the search box.) They may also join your child’s FAN CLUB and leave comments about their favorite artist’s work.
If you ever have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact me at: slane@jackson.k12.mo.us.
Thank you!

What I Need {WIN}
Building a Reader at Home
For Beginning Readers:
- Point out and read words in natural settings - stories, streets, etc.
- Memorize sight words
- Visualize the story in your head
- Ask questions before, during, and after you read
Don't immediately tell an unknown word to your student. Instead ask them to:
- Sound out the word
- Break the word into chunks
- Try a different vowel sound (long/short)
- Use the illustrations for clues
- Skip the word and reread the sentence / what would make sense?
For Advanced Readers:
- Notice interesting, new vocabulary words, and make it a challenge to use them in conversation
- Read with expression
- Explore non-fiction books and their text features (diagrams & table of contents) along with other genres
- Compare and contrast books
- Explore books from the same author
COUNSELOR CORNER
During the month of October, the focus of our counseling class lessons was disABILITY awareness (how we are the same and different, but all have ABILITIES) and safety. On Wednesday, October 31st, our school resource officer visited with our students about Halloween safety.
In November, we will begin our discussions about handling conflicts with our peers and dealing with feelings. We will learn and/or review tattle vs. report and participate in bully prevention lessons.
Bully Prevention Terms:
Tattle: To tell on someone in order to get attention for yourself or get another person in trouble.
Reporting: To tell on someone to get help for them or yourself.
Bullying: In order to be considered bullying, the behavior is aggressive in nature, has the intention of harm, includes an imbalance of power, and occurs more than one time.
Conflict: A conflict is a disagreement that is more naturally occurring. There is typically no intent to harm, but a difference of goals or opinions.
Rude: Inadvertently saying or doing something that hurts someone else.
Mean: Purposefully saying or doing something to hurt someone once (or maybe twice.)
THE PRIDE OF OUR TRIBE
WORK HARD DO YOUR BEST SHOW YOUR ORCHARD PRIDE!
Each Week a staff member picks another staff member to receive the Orchard Pride banner. It is given to the staff member whom they think shows PRIDE here at school every day. The banner hangs outside their classroom door or area for the entire week and a new staff member is announced during the Monday morning announcements.
