5th Grade Newsletter

September 2015

What is my child learning about this month?

Science with Mr. Twa

This month students will be learning about the inquiry process. They will be making testable questions, hypotheses, testing one variable, gathering data, creating tables, drawing conclusions, and asking more questions.

Math with Mrs. Hladky

In math we are doing so many things right now. For the last few days we have been focusing on characteristics of a great learner, listener, partner, and problem solver! The 5th graders did a fantastic job solving their first problem last week! Ask your child what consecutive means!

This week we will begin our Stepping Stones curriculum. In our first module, we will be studying decimals and place value up to the thousandths. We will also get started on our math vocabulary book soon. And last but not least, get out your flashcards and study up! We will begin our multiplication quizzes soon.

Check out Mrs. Hladky's NISD Moodle Page

Many times I am asked by parents what else their child can do at home to improve their understanding of the math concepts we are learning at the time. First of all, your student will receive math homework every Monday and it is due on Friday. Secondly, I invite you to go to my NISD moodle page. ON my website I have added many kahn academy videos that go well with the topics we are covering in each unit. Each video includes opportunities to practice that concept as well. Clink the link below and check it out!

Language Arts & Social Studies with Mrs. Brittain & Mrs. Harris

In Reading and Writing, students are learning about the habits of a good reader and writer. Students will be reviewing and practicing several reading strategies and skills along with the stages of the writing process.

In Social Studies, students will be learning about the economic and geographic factors that influenced patterns and settlements and what challenges people faced when settling in a new place.

This week, students started their first cycle of vocabulary words. We will be studying 5 words and their synonyms & antonyms each week. Students will be bringing home a copy of their words and definitions on Tuesdays. There will be a vocabulary quiz every Friday. Be on the lookout for a weekly choice menu that students can use to practice their words at home.
