Newsletter Term 3 Week 9
St Patrick's School Masterton 21st September 2021
PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE
Kia ora koutou,
In many countries around the world, the Catholic Church celebrates October as the Month of Mission. Prayers are offered for the missionary work of the Church as inspired by Matthew 28:19 "Go and make disciples of all nations." We are all encouraged to be more aware that we all are missionaries, find what gives meaning to our lives, and share it. Perhaps when you are sitting around the dinner table or at home on the couch it would be a good opportunity to talk with your child about how they can be a missionary and show care, give hope or be courageous towards others.
Congratulations to the following children whose artwork has been selected to be displayed at the 2021 Breadcraft Schools Art exhibition at Aratoi. The exhibition opens on Saturday 18th September and closes on 17th October. Please get along and enjoy the fantastic artwork if you have a free half-hour at some point soon. Congratulations: Vivian Do, Paige Macarthur, Milla Nelson, Ayesha Morcilla, Sienna Hawkins, Amelia Riley, Amber Jacobs, Eliana Baird, Amaziah Levy, Willow Tunnell, and Hugo Jackson.
Thank you to everyone who gave their feedback on the 2022 school dates consultation put out last week. From this, I can confirm that two-thirds of your responses indicated that starting after Waitangi Day was the preference or were not concerned when we started. The staff also gave their feedback and approximately 75% also like the idea of a later starting date. So following this feedback I can confirm that the 2022 schools dates for St Patrick’s School will be:
Term 1: Tuesday 8th February - Thursday 14 April
Term 2: Monday 2nd May - Friday 8th July
Term 3: Monday 25 July - Friday 30th September
Term 4: Monday 17th October - Tuesday 20th December
As we move to the end of term 3 the teaching staff are starting to undertake professional development in learning how to use our school management system and app to share student learning and progress with you. During term 4 we will be starting to share and report to you about what your child is doing at school and the progress they are making. This is something that will evolve and be changed as we learn about what works and doesn’t as the term progresses but it is certainly something we are excited about starting. More updates will follow soon!
Listed below are updated end of term key events:
September 29th - Catholic Schools Day
October 1st - Last day of term 3
October 18th - First day of term 4
November 2nd - Student-Led Conferences

Gospel of the Week:
Mark 9:30-37
Jesus Speaks Again about His Death
30 Jesus and his disciples left that place and went on through Galilee. Jesus did not want anyone to know where he was, 31 because he was teaching his disciples: “The Son of Man will be handed over to those who will kill him. Three days later, however, he will rise to life.”
32 But they did not understand what this teaching meant, and they were afraid to ask him.
Who Is the Greatest?
33 They came to Capernaum, and after going indoors Jesus asked his disciples, “What were you arguing about on the road?”
34 But they would not answer him, because on the road they had been arguing among themselves about who was the greatest. 35 Jesus sat down, called the twelve disciples, and said to them, “Whoever wants to be first must place himself last of all and be the servant of all.” 36 Then he took a child and had him stand in front of them. He put his arms around him and said to them, 37 “Whoever welcomes in my name one of these children, welcomes me; and whoever welcomes me, welcomes not only me but also the one who sent me.”

Over the last week the children have been learning about how their behaviour impacts the feelings of those around them. We have used picture books, videos and scenarios to reflect on how different actions impact the way that others feel and also that those actions can impact others in different ways. For example, some may get mad while others get upset when someone takes something off them. Or someone may feel comforted by a hug while someone else may feel uncomfortable.
World Car Free Day encourages car users to choose an alternative mode of transport. Although there were unofficial car free days in the 1970s, World Car Free Day began in 2000 with hundreds of cities around the world taking part.
“Over the past 18 months through COVID-19 lockdowns we’ve seen how pleasant it is to be out walking or cycling when there are fewer vehicles on the road.”
Fewer vehicles on the road also contributes to lower carbon emissions, better traffic flow and more parking availability.
“Some people have to drive, but there are many of us who can change – even if it is just once a week,” said Holly.
One way to get around is to switch four wheels for two, strap on a helmet and cycle to work. If you choose to cycle, make sure to be bright, be safe and be seen.
If your commute is too far to walk, mix it up and bus some of the way and walk, bike or scooter the rest of the way. A 15 to 20-minute walk twice a day is a great way to help improve both your physical and mental health.
