April 2023 Superintendent's Update

April 2023
Greetings, Upper Moreland Families, Community Members, and Staff!
It’s official! Our last day of school for the 2022-2023 school year is Wednesday, June 7th. That last day will be here before we know it with less than 30 days of school remaining for students. I am excited to attend my first Upper Moreland graduation as Superintendent on June 6th to celebrate the Class of 2023 as they begin the next exciting chapter of their lives.
As I spend time in our schools, I enjoy reviewing students’ work displayed in the hallways and display cases. To celebrate Earth month in April, I read pieces some of our second grade students composed to share how they would make the world a better place. Our second graders had some great ideas to share.
Speaking of second graders, as you will see in the video highlights for April, our second graders attended the annual Envirothon hosted by the Upper Moreland High School. It was fantastic to see the front lawn on the high school campus bustling with over 240 second graders and 80 high school students. The high school students shared their passion for learning and even returned to their youth as they played games with the second graders. It was hard to tell who enjoyed the time together more–the high school golden bears or the elementary golden bears.
As we near the end of the school year, each of our schools will hold various activities and special events including the elementary art show, our proms, 5th grade promotion, and 8th grade promotion. Be sure to review communications from your child’s teacher and building for important information about each event.
Thank you for your continued partnership as an Upper Moreland community to support our students’ success. Our greatest strength for our students is in our work together.
Sincerely,
Dr. Susan Elliott
Superintendent of Schools
End of Year Testing
This time of year marks the start of end of year assessments when our students get to show what they know. Students in grades 3 through 8 will take the PSSA assessment in April and May. High school students will take Advanced Placement (AP) exams, Keystone exams, and course finals.
Your children may experience increased levels of stress or nervousness as they prepare to take these assessments. I ask you to support and encourage our students. Make sure students get enough rest and eat a good breakfast on their exam days. Encourage them to do their best and let them know how proud you are of them. I know I am!

Annual Envirothon Brings Together High School Students and Second Graders
On Wednesday, April 19th, UMHS students hosted UMPS second graders for the annual Envirothon in the front lawn of the high school. The high school golden bears helped our younger golden bears learn about soil erosion, the effects of oil spills on birds, recycling, water filtration, and more.
Thanks to Ms. Monaghan and Ms. Fleck for organizing this event. And, special thanks to the 80 high school students and the parent volunteers who helped make this learning experience one to remember.
America 250PA Event at UMPS and UMIS
On Tuesday, April 11th Upper Moreland hosted the America 250PA celebration. Volunteers from across the commonwealth, including state representatives, Pennsylvania State Troopers, representatives from the PA Historical Society, and Mascots from many local colleges and universities visited Upper Moreland to read to our students and teach them about the importance of Pennsylvania history as we prepare to celebrate the 250th anniversary of the United States in 2026. Even William Penn visited our 4th and 5th graders to teach them about early Pennsylvania history.
Town Hall with Governor Shapiro
On Tuesday, April 18th, Governor Shapiro held a virtual Town Hall for elementary school students across the commonwealth. Over 100 classrooms submitted questions to the Governor. Only 10 classrooms were selected to read their questions, and Mrs. Gallagher’s 4th grade class was one of the 10 classrooms selected to present their question during the town hall. The class asked Governor Shapiro to share the most pressing issue facing public schools today. He identified mental health as the most pressing issue facing our schools and that he hopes to provide schools with more funds to support their needs.
Congratulations to Mrs. Gallagher’s class on being selected to participate in the town hall!
Senior Trip to Disney
On Friday, April 21st, UMHS seniors boarded a plane for their senior trip to Disney World. This trip celebrates their time as Upper Moreland students before they graduate and join the ranks of UM alumni as the Class of 2023.

On Thursday, April 27th, UMHS presented their Annual Spring Music Concert. The concert included performances by the Concert Band, a Woodwind Quintet, the Advanced Saxophone Ensemble, the Concert Percussion Ensemble, and the UMHS PopRocks cover band. It was an amazing evening of music!
Among the talented musicians performing was UMHS Senior an AP Music Theory student, Aaron Snyder, who premiered his own composition called "Fantasia in F minor", performed by the Woodwind Quintet. Congratulations to Aaron on this accomplishment!
Special thanks to our Music Director, Glenn Cowen, for supporting and encouraging our students to grow as musicians and incredible individuals. A video of the Annual Spring Music Concert will be available here on our website next week.
UMHS April 2023 Students of the Month:
Victoria Rosenbaum
We are proud to announce that Victoria Rosenbaum has been selected as the April 2023 Rotary Student of the Month!
Victoria is a devoted full-time Montgomery County Community College student. At Montco, she has consistently been on the Dean's List as she takes five, three-credit courses each semester. She plans to finish her associate's degree in Secondary Education, at the end of the Fall 2023 semester. Victoria then plans to continue her education at Western Governors University to obtain her bachelor's degree in education by the end of 2024. She hopes to teach English in middle school.
Victoria was nominated by Mr. John Martin: "I'd like to nominate Victoria Rosenbaum for the Student of the Month award. Toward the end of the 2021/22 academic year, Victoria approached me about serving as an intern in my English 101 and English 102 classes during her senior year. Having already been familiar with Victoria's work ethic and plans of becoming a middle school English teacher, I quickly accepted... I have no doubt that she's going to be an amazing teacher."
Victoria plays soccer for the high school team. Outside of school, she enjoys baking and playing backyard games, like cornhole, with her family.

We are excited to announce that Joseph Hardee has been selected as the student of the month for Eastern Center for Arts and Technology sponsored by Eastern’s faculty, the Joint Operating Committee, and the Willow Grove Rotary Club.

Another uncle worked for the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA), and his grandmother is a therapist.
At Eastern, Joseph serves as the Protective Services program Platoon Sergeant, which is the second highest-ranking student official in the class. He has earned many industry-standard certifications through his program such as Basic Life Support, Hazardous Materials Awareness, and several certifications from National Incident Management Systems (NIMS). Joseph is regularly chosen to speak about his program at Easter recruitment events. At Upper Moreland High School, Joseph is a Defensive Starter on the football team.
“Joseph is an outstanding student and a leader in the classroom,” said Mr. Dan Schaeffer, Eastern’s Protective Services Instructor. “He has a professionalism and commitment to the field that is beyond his years. I know that he will make an excellent police officer and I cannot wait to see what the future holds for him and his career.”
After Eastern and Upper Moreland High School, Joseph will be attending Shippensburg University to study Criminal Justice. After earning a degree in Criminal Justice, Joseph plans to join the police academy and climb the ranks in the police force.
