What kind of disturbance creates Electromagnetic Waves?

They are formed by vibrations of electromagnetic fields. These fields fields are created charged molecules, such as protons and electrons, move. These created electromagnetic fields create energy. (ex. radiation, light energy)
There are two main ways that electromagnetic waves and mechanical waves are different:

  1. Electromagnetic waves do not need a medium to propogate, whereas mechanical waves do. Propagate is any way in which a wave moves. A medium is matter that a wave travels through. So, electromagnetic waves do not need to travel through matter to move, and mechanical waves do.
  2. Mechanical waves are caused by a disturbance of matter. On the other hand, electromagnetic waves are formed by a disturbance in electric and magnetic fields- not in matter.
