Hooch Happenings

Todd's Tidbits
Hooch Community,
In the coming weeks, you will be hearing more about "No Shame" Chattahoochee. This is a joint initiative with One Johns Creek and Pathways2Life. It is a pledge to do my/your/our part in stopping the stigma surrounding mental health and substance abuse challenges.
We can work together to empower each other while encouraging those in need to seek care, treatment, and recovery. More to come, but know that this is another way to make our great school better!!
All the best,
Dr. Mike Todd
Principal
Showing up Matters for R.E.A.L.
Addressing chronic absenteeism is a key component of improving graduation rates, increasing academic achievement, and giving our students the best chance at success in their adult life. As we complete the 11th week of school, sign into your parent portal to see how many days of school your student has missed. Chronic absenteeism is defined as missing 10% of the school year. Today is school day #52 – has your student missed 5 or more days of school? Showing up to school everyday matters for R.E.A.L.
Last Week Exams Schedules
During the last week of each semester, teachers will administer their last assignment of the semester during the designated times for each class period on the "Last Week Exams Schedule" available HERE.
- For first semester, these exams run from Tue Dec 13 through Thur Dec 15, 2022
- The last day of the semester, Fri Dec 16, will serve as a "Recovery Day" for students who need to recover the grade earned on a last week exam taken earlier in the week
- Wed Dec 14, Thur Dec 15, and Fri Dec 16 will be half-days for students with busses departing around 12:30pm
- Students are expected to be in attendance and exams may not be taken early. Any student who misses their "Last Week Exam" will need to make-up missed exams in January (either on the Jan 3rd teacher work day -or- on Saturday January 7th from 8am to 11am)
- Depending on the course, these exams will be entered into the gradebook and count as either one major or one minor assignment - there is not a separate grading category for last week exams
- Questions? Please reach out directly to your child's teachers (directory HERE) or to your child's administrator (HERE)

Counseling Corner
Parents/Guardians of 11th graders:
Have you scheduled your student’s Junior Advisement meeting yet? If not, please go to https://www.fultonschools.org/Page/26071 and get started! Links to the Junior Information recording and PowerPoint are available under the presentation icon, and steps that must be completed prior to the meeting are below that. This meeting is mandatory for all Juniors, and parents are invited to attend as well. Students and parents/guardians are expected to watch the presentation or review the PowerPoint prior to attending the meeting; this will ensure the 20-minute meeting is dedicated to each student’s specific post-secondary planning. We look forward to meeting with you soon!
Financial Aid Night:
Financial Aid Night will be held virtually on Wednesday, November 2nd at 5:30 pm. The link to join the Teams meeting is Financial Aid Night. A representative from the Georgia Student Finance Commission will be presenting about the FAFSA, HOPE Scholarship/Grant, and Zell Miller Scholarship/Grant. If you are unable to attend this event, the Power Point and recording of the presentation will be available on the Counseling Office website https://www.fultonschools.org/domain/5407 a few days afterward.
Seniors applying to college:
The November 15th and December 1st deadlines for college applications are quickly approaching! Students must have completed the following at least 10 school days (not including weekends, holidays, or school breaks) prior to the college deadline:
- In Naviance, add the college to their Colleges I’m Applying To list and submit a transcript request.
- If applicable, match their Common App account with Naviance and complete the FERPA waiver (click on any college in Common App, then click the Recommenders and FERPA tab). Their colleges will then populate in Colleges I’m Applying To in Naviance.
- If applying to a college that requires a counselor form or letter, upload their completed Senior Profile in their Counselor’s Class of 2023 Teams.
Videos and guides for various parts of Naviance can be found at https://www.fultonschools.org/Page/19744.
Please ask your students to double-check that their selected college deadlines and application/decision types (ex. Early Decision, Early Action, Regular Decision) are listed correctly in Naviance, and if not, to update them! We need both of these to be absolutely correct to ensure your students’ documents are received by their colleges in time.
U.S. Presidential Scholars Program
The 2022-2023 U.S. Presidential Scholar application form is available at U.S. Presidential Scholars Program (gadoe.org) and is due November 15, 2022 by 5:00 pm. Students must meet the following criteria:
- Are/will be U.S. citizens or Legal Permanent Residents by November 15, 2022
- Will graduate between January and August 2023
- Score exceptionally well on either the SAT or ACT, based on tests taken between September 2019 and October 2022
Students are selected based on their academic success, essays, school evaluations and transcripts, community service, leadership, and commitment to high ideals.
Please note that the submission of an application does not guarantee that the student will be nominated for the national recognition, and 2 students - 1 young woman and 1 young man – are ultimately selected from each state. The U.S. Presidential Scholars Program is not a scholarship – it is a recognition program, and students chosen as U.S. Presidential Scholars receive a medallion in commemoration of their achievements during the online National Recognition Program.
The names of Semifinalists are posted in mid-April, names of U.S. Presidential Scholars are posted in May, and the online National Recognition Program is tentatively scheduled for June 2023.

Cafeteria Serves Chef-Inspired Georgia Grown Kale & Apple Salad!
During the month of November, the café is featuring a Georgia Grown and chef-inspired Kale & Apple Salad at lunch as part of Fulton County’s School Nutrition Harvest of the Month Program. The kale served in November was grown and harvested in Norman Park, Georgia. Because the kale is grown closer to home it helps support our Georgia farmers and takes less fuel to get to our cafeterias! The dark leafy green kale is not only Georgia grown, but also is great for your body! Kale is packed with vitamins A, C and K! You’ve got to try this Kale & Apple Salad, served in the cafeteria as a side salad!

Football – 2-6 overall, 2-2 in region play. Beat Northview HS by the score of 14-9! Next home game is TONIGHT October 28th vs. Greater Atlanta Christian at 7:30pm in the Arena. Be sure to come and support our seniors as this is their last regular season game for the ’22-’23 school year.
Softball – 20-13 overall, 9-3 in region play. They entered the GHSA state playoffs last week as a #3 seed. The beat Chapel Hill HS on day 1 and advanced to the winners bracket to play Loganville HS. Unfortunately, they lost to Loganville and had to beat Cass HS in order to advance and they did!!! With that win they advanced to the Sweet 16 in the GHSA state playoffs to play Loganville again losing that game which ultimately ended their season. We’re so proud of their season and all they’ve accomplished as this senior group had never had the opportunity to play in the GHSA state playoffs!

Varsity Boys won the region championship placing 1st in the region event with Senior Diego Santiago being the #1 overall runner for the varsity boys. Other Chattahoochee HS Boys ran really well with Chris Connolly placing 2nd overall, Jerry McGaw placing 4th, and lastly Josh Coleman (freshman) placing 7th overall.
