Thomas Jefferson Middle School 2020 - 21
Honoring Our Veterans:
This year in honor of our veterans, all TJ students will have the opportunity to dedicate a star to a family member/friend who has served in the military. These stars will be on display for all students and staff to see. It is our small token of thanks to all of the men and women who have served and currently serve our nation.
In class learners will have the opportunity to fill out a star in their Viking Time class. Remote learners will have a star template in their Social Studies folder with directions on how to submit it.
6th grade Keeps Moving Right Along!
The 2nd grading period has started so, please keep checking your child’s grades! It is important that all of us reinforce the importance of staying connected—parents, students, and school.
The TJMS 6th Grade Team would like to thank all parents that took time out of their busy schedules to attend Parent Teacher Conferences. Thank goodness for Zoom! J
What are we learning at the moment?
Social Studies—The Election Process, Dia de los Muertos, and Ancient Greece (in that order)
Math— completed Fractions, Decimals and Percents and moving onto Intro to Algebra unit.
Science— finished our Ecology unit and will begin Astronomy. Our journey begins with Earth's motions and understanding why we have seasons.

Core Plus—is working on a Fall Writing and Data Analysis and Statistics
Parents, as always, if you could please:
· Check grades and assignments on Skyward/Canvas weekly.

· Students will need earbuds/headphones for classes.
· Contact your child’s teacher with any questions/concerns if your child is struggling academically—We all want your children to be successful!
7th Grade is off to a roaring good start for second quarter. Mrs. Olsen's Language Arts classes are getting a kick out of the fun characters in the 1920s themed novel, 'A Long Way From Chicago'. Her Advanced students are delving deep into the mystery towns in 'Uglies'. Mrs. Murvine's classes are learning an important lesson about the value of friendship in their novel study, 'Freak the Mighty'. In Social Studies, we are taking a short pause from our History of World Religion Unit to cover the process and history of the American Election system. We will Exploring World Languages are learning a lot about new cultures, and are currently studying the German Language and culture. In science we are working on Newton's Laws of Motion. In Advanced Science, we are learning about the layers of the earth.
Please continue to remind your students to charge their chromebook each night. Additionally, please remind your student to check Canvas daily for assignments that may need to be done. Remote Learners: don't forget to read your weekly newsletter! Keep up the great work, Seventh Graders!
8th Grade- Who Did It?
Recently, the 8th grade students at TJMS participated in Teacher Trivia. Each Viking Time class competed to see who came out on top in guessing which of their teachers were the answers to questions such as:
Who shares the same birthday?
Who spent their summers working at Dairy Queen?
Who went to college on a full-ride athletic scholarship?
The winning Viking Time class was then first to pick its color for our Class of 2025 t-shirts. These t-shirts will be worn for special events throughout the school year. Mr. Krenz’s students were this year’s Teacher Trivia champions.
*8th graders took the PSAT test on October 29. Look for results for this benchmark test in a few weeks.
*Veteran’s Day activities will take place on November 10.
*If a student is absent, he or she can access the day’s lesson through all the 8th grade teachers’ Canvas pages- just like they were a remote learner for the day.
*Please remember that remote learners should be logging into Canvas and watching videos or live streaming every day during regular school hours.
Hello TJMS Families! Student Council applications are NOW available! Students should check their grade level Canvas page. Meetings will be ZOOM, so ALL learners can participate! If your student is interested, please have them fill out the Student Council application!
Americanism and Government Scholarship
The American Legion is sponsoring an Americanism and Government Scholarship Contest during the month of November. This program is open to any student in the 7th and 8th grade in any public, private, and parochial school within the State of Indiana. At the post level, officials will grade all tests and select two students from each grade as local winners. The winning tests are forwarded to the District Americanism and Government Test Chairperson who will select the District’s 7th and 8th grade winners. The District winners are then forwarded to the Department Headquarters, to be considered for selection as a state-level winner.
Awards: There are a total of 4 state winners selected by the Americanism and Government Committee of The American Legion Department of Indiana. Each Junior Americanism and Government winner will receive a $500.00
Interested students should email Mrs. Joll at email@example.com to be entered into the contest. Students will take the test at TJMS at the end of November.
News From the Media Center
Did you know that the TJMS Media Center used over $2,000 of our book fair profits for student and staff giveaways in 2019? If you have a 7th or 8th grade student, they can tell you about all of the giveaways that happen during book fair week. Let’s continue the tradition!
Mark your calendars for our upcoming virtual book fair with in-school displays and delivery happening from Monday, November 30 to Friday, December 4. Students will access fair materials using various digital tools and will request to purchase materials in a format similar to how students currently request library books. In addition, we will only accept purchases using the eWallet feature, which means all transactions will be digital. (Note that this is different from the online fair option, which will also be available.)
From year-to-year, our book fair is a special celebration of reading for our entire school community. Modifying our book fair to follow COVID precautions and procedures will ensure this year is no different. Stay tuned for more details!
Join Games Club
Games Club has begun and it's never too late to join! Games Club is a time for students to relax with friends while playing board, card, computer, or small electronic games in the cafeteria. Students are encouraged to bring in their own games especially if they are games that don’t require sharing of game pieces. We will be doing our best to make sure masks are worn, hand sanitizer is used, and safety guidelines are followed.
Students need to sign up on their grade level Canvas page and pick up a permission slip from Mrs. Highlan in A118. On Thursdays, students can take the late bus home or parents can pick up their child at 3:45 at the front of the school. Email Mrs. Highlan if you have any questions. firstname.lastname@example.org
Attention 7th and 8th grade parents! It's not too early to start thinking about college! Indiana’s 21st Century Scholars program offers income-eligible Hoosier students up to four years of paid tuition
at an eligible Indiana college or university after they graduate from high school. Seventh and eighth
grade Indiana students whose families meet income eligibility guidelines can apply to become a 21st Century Scholar in middle school. Applications must be received by June 30 of the student’s 8th grade year. Please click here for more information and to see if your family meets the guidelines for this scholarship:
