Burkholder Middle School
Week of January 4-8, 2021
Dear Families,
I hope everyone in the Burkholder Community had a good winter break. It is hard to believe that we are already halfway through the school year. As part of our continuing effort to better communicate with our community, we have created this weekly newsletter which will be a “one-stop-shop” for all information regarding the happenings at Burkholder. Hopefully, our newsletter will provide both students and parents access to information needed to remain successful at Burkholder.
Additionally, I would like to thank both the students and teachers for all their hard work and dedication that made the first half of the year successful. I know fulltime distance education was a major adjustment for families and teachers and even at times a struggle. As always, Burkholder teachers and staff will continue to provide assistance and guidance when needed to ensure student success.
Thank you,
Chris Hermes
Principal
Our Daily Master Schedule
On days when your child's class period states, Teacher Support and Independent/Group Work (asynchronous learning), students need to do the following:
1. Students enter each class period via Clever to get to their teachers' Canvas. The system automatically notes that your child is present in class. The teacher will pull an attendance report from the system and take attendance in Infinite Campus.
2. Students need to view their teacher Canvas for the asynchronous activity and/or assignment. There will ALWAYS be an activity and/or assignment listed there for students to complete during the asynchronous class period.
ELA: Work on Reading Plus. For information on Reading Plus, click on the link here: Reading Plus Information
Attendance
Students are expected to engage with their schedule of courses and classes on a daily basis. To be counted as present or participating, the students must either:
- Complete coursework during the same day the class meets; and/or
- Attend a real-time class session; and/or
- Meet or communicate with the licensed teacher or substitute about their progress.

Haven't Set Up Your Canvas Parent Observer Account? Here is How....
Parents can sign up as an observer in Canvas. Observers can link their Canvas account to their student's account so they can see assignment dues dates, announcements, and other course content. Observers can view the course content but cannot participate in the course.
Click on this link from CCSD FACES https://faces.ccsd.net/university-of-family-learning-ufl/online-courses/canvas-observer-registration-and-pairing/ or click on the attached instructions on how to set up your observer account in Canvas.

Burkholder Middle School continues to offer additional support and teacher-led tutoring every Tuesday and Wednesday evenings from 5-7pm.
If your child needs extra support in math, ELA, science, or social studies, be sure to attend these tutoring sessions. Google Meet Links will be shared with your child through Canvas.
We know many of our parents are balancing work/home/and distance learning, so it's important to the staff at BMS to offer more hours of support to our families.
