Ms. Harris' Weekly Update
August 27th-31st
What's Going On This Week:
- Ms. Harris' Science: This week in Science we will continue our unit on "Thinking Like A Scientist". There will be a quiz on Tuesday 28th covering process skills, safety rules, and scientific tools. We will then start observing items and classifying those observations as quantitative and qualitative. Students will be reminded to take home their Science IAN on Monday to study for the quiz, but can bring it home any night that they want. On Friday, we are doing our first lab on observations. Students will need an apple (any color, size, shape) by Friday to use in the lab. They can bring it in before Friday if needed.
- Ms. Uhlenhake and Mrs. Thurston's Math/ELA: In math this week we will be reviewing place value. We will also be talking about the different number forms and how to compare numbers. The students will have a reading numbers quiz on Tuesday (Thurston) and Wednesday (Uhlenhake), so please make sure they have studied their reading numbers sheet with you. In reading, we are starting spelling (Words Their Way) and learning how to interpret characters using our new class read aloud, “The Tiger Rising”. In writing, we are starting our realistic fiction unit where the students will be creating their first story based on a small moment that they have experienced. As a reminder, their writer’s notebooks should be covered by Tuesday at the latest!
- Ms. Harris' GT Math/ELA: In math this week, we will be reviewing place value and applying that knowledge to an in-class place value detective project. Students will have a reading numbers quiz on Tuesday 28th. We will also cover forms of numbers and comparing numbers this week. In reading we will start our first Junior Great Books story, "Thank you Ma'am." We will discuss the theme of trust and read through the story each day. We will review vocabulary, ask questions, and take notes on different aspects of the story. On Thursday 30th students will take an open book test on "Thank you Ma'am". In writing, we will continue with our realistic fiction unit. Students will choose a small moment and start drafting their first story. We will not be starting spelling until after Labor Day.
Scouts Meeting Tuesday 28th at 7 pm
If your child (girl or boy) is interested in being in Scouts this year, there is an informational meeting in the cafeteria on Tuesday at 7 pm.
School Spirit Day is Friday 31st
Students are encouraged on Friday to wear their FMES, blue, and yellow gear to celebrate school spirit day. The school store will also be open.
Lunch Procedures
We are asking that parents hold off on coming to eat with their children until after Labor Day. This gives the students time to learn the lunch procedures and rules. After Labor Day, parents are definitely welcome to come eat with their children at our 12:05 lunch time. When you come, you may eat on the stage with your child. Starting this year, though, they may not bring a friend to eat with them on the stage.
Other Information:
- There will be a PTO Mtg on September 6th at 7 pm. All parents are welcome to attend! Since it is an evening meeting, this is a great opportunity to get to know what's going on at FMES.
