THIS IS A SPECIAL EDITION WITH EXTRA STUDENT WRITERS AND LOTS OF IMPORTANT INFORMATION! Please enjoy :)
**Miss Green taught us about bees! See Daniel's article for more information**
DANIEL'S ARTICLE
On June 6th, We learned about bees-how they make their honey and wax and what kinds there are.
The way they make their honey is that they collect nectar from flowers and technically barf if into another bee’s mouth, and then it gets barfed into another bee’s mouth and so on until it’s honey.
The way they make their wax and hive is that they feed the larva bees honey, and then when the larva bee moves, something comes out of its abdomen, and the other bees put it in their mouth to shape it, and then voila! WAX! They use that wax to make their hive.
There are worker bees, they are all female and they collect nectar and feed the queen bee.
The Drone bees are male and are lazy until it’s time to make a new queen bee.
The queen bees are female and take care of the bee eggs.

**We extracted DNA from a strawberry in science! See Bryce's article for more information**
BRYCE'S ARTICLE
In science we LITERALLY EXTRACTED DNA FROM A STRAWBERRY!! Sorry for the over excitement. Anyways, here is a video link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vPGKv53zSRQ.
If that is not clear to you, basically you put a strawberry in a bag, mix water, dish soap, and salt. Then pour it in the bag, squish the strawberry for around 2.5 min, put it in a beaker, and boom, strawberry dna. It smells like paint, and it’s VERY VERY VERY squishy.

Summer Learning Ideas
Math:
Remember that the students will always have free access to Khan Academy online. (khanacademy.org) The students just need to go to the website, log in with their current credentials, and then choose "subjects" in the upper left hand corner. They can then choose the grade level material they need to work on and then they will start the "missions"! Students can also go to khanacademy.org/mappers and continue to practice on their leveled skills, too.
Reading:
READ, READ, READ!
Auburn Hills Summer library program: http://auburn-hills.lib.mi.us/
Have you used the Lexile Find a Book feature?
Go to https://fab.lexile.com/
Enter your lexile range.
Choose your areas of interests.
View your results!
Find the books at local libraries or online!
Check out other website sources for books!

DON'T get too hung up on reading EXACTLY in your child's lexile. Find a balance! Maybe try encouraging your child to read every other book within their lexile. The purpose is to increase awareness that when we read within in our "zone of proximal development" we are challenging ourselves to come across new vocabulary and content.
Science and Social Studies:
Students will continue to have access to www.discoveryeducation.com using these credentials below. This website has thousands of videos, reading passages, interactive activities, etc. for science and social studies.

Pass - ghes5
Khan Academy has more than just math! It also has middle school and high school level science and social studies courses. Have your child log in and click on "subjects" to check it out!
WE ARE EXCITED FOR OUR END OF YEAR PARTY JUNE 12TH!!

ELA whole class novel Socratic seminar AND Allegorical children's books
SOCRATIC SEMINAR
As you know we have been reading The Little Prince, and we finished it and watched the movie. Now we are doing a Socratic circle about The Little Prince. Here's how it works: 1. Speak loud. 2. Listen closely. 3. Speak without raising hands. 4. Refer to text. 5. Talk to each other not just the leader. 6. When confused, say can you please clarify that. 7. Invite others to speak-not just best friends. 8. Consider everything meaningful 9. Students are responsible for the quality of seminar. I'm not going to get in too deep into the questions, but they are all really deep in The Little Prince.

ALLEGORIES
In class we have been working on some allegories/children’s stories, and we are making them so they are fun fantasy stories. On 6-13-18, we are going to be sharing them with Ms.Carion’s class. Ms.Gierman had done a read-aloud for the whole class that was called the Little Prince, and as she read it to us and we were learning about what an allegory is.
What an allegory is, is when a book has symbolic meaning to it. The books that we are writing are all allegories and we all have to have a life lesson or a theme to our stories that the kindergarten kids can understand.

Math: Whodunnit Clue Algebra
So we are playing this game called whodunnit (clue). Most of you have probably heard of this game. We will use the order of operations to win. We are in teams of 4. So the game says that 6 contestants were stunned to find their lowest scoring colleague dead. They must figure out who was the MURDERER is before the bell rings. I bet it’s YOU Jimmy! There are math equations that give you hints of who did the crime. So there are sets of clues for the people to figure out who the BLOODY MURDERER is. So if you find out the killer, then you are the WINNER! And that's Clue in a nutshell.
-Carson John Pavloff :-D
**Because we are working on PBL in math, many students will not be able to continue on with math homework in the workbooks. Some can, and that is fine too. Other options are Khan or the NWEA site since they work from the students current level :)
Let me know if you have any questions!**
-PLEASE RETURN ALL MATH BOOKS FROM HOME
Science: Punnett Squares
Since we were studying about DNA, what better way to study than with punnett squares. We had used punnett squares to figure out how our imaginary babies were going to be, and how our monsters were going to look.We learned some terms while using punnett squares such as homozygous recessive, and homozygous dominant.I think the punnett squares are important because we can use them in real life.
