NOTE FROM THE PRINCIPAL
John Harris Families,
We have made it through an incredible first month of school. The students are doing an outstanding job. They are wearing their masks and keeping a safe distance. It is fun to see their smiles through their eyes...SMEYES. I hope you see the same sort of reaction at home. Thank you for sharing your child with us!
We will continue to utilize the zones during recess time. The zones have allowed the students to learn new games and play with new equipment. We are so proud of them!
The staff continues to work very hard in the classroom. We have the best team at John Harris! They are continuing to practice and review all the John Harris expectations. Staff are providing extra support in the lunchroom and at recess.
This year we are continuing our Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) journey. This has allowed us to focus on all the positives students demonstrate during school. We have also implemented a new behavior referral sheet. These referral sheets allow us to identify areas students might be struggling with and provide additional re-teaching.
Thank you to our amazing families! We could not be on this COVID journey without each of you. We appreciate all your support. Thank you for calling the school when your child has not been feeling well. Thank you for taking the time to get them tested or providing us with medical documentation! This has allowed us to stay healthy and in school!
Conferences:
John Harris will be holding virtual parent-teacher conferences in October. (October 13th: 12:00 - 7:00 p.m. October 15th: 3:30 - 7:00 p.m.) Conferences will be held through Zoom, Google Meet, or by phone. You should have received a sign-up genius from your child’s teacher. Please contact the office if you have any questions or concerns.
Thank you again!
Mrs. Dobberpuhl
Revision to R2L (Return to Learn) 14-Day Quarantine
This message was sent Wednesday evening to all Families. We are including it our newsletter to make sure our John Harris families are aware of the changes.
Hello Sioux Falls School District Families. Tonight, the school board revised the requirement for the 14-day quarantine for close contacts as part of the District’s Return to Learn plan. These changes will apply to close contacts whose exposure occurred in the school setting, and both the positive case and the close contact were masked when the exposure occurred. For this setting, the 14-day quarantine is now recommended, but not required.
If you wish to have your child continue the recommended close contact quarantine period at home, the absence will NOT count against them.
The 14-day quarantine is now recommended, but not required if specific conditions are met.
A person identified by the school as a close contact may return to school IF:
- The positive case was wearing a mask
- The close contact was wearing a mask when they were exposed
- The exposure occurred in a school setting
- The person has no COVID-related symptoms
- The parent/guardian has called the school to confirm eligibility to return
- The close contact MUST monitor for symptoms daily and wear a mask during the 14-day quarantine.
- The Intent to Return form is turned into the school upon return
If your child becomes symptomatic, they must isolate at home per the SFSD illness exclusion protocol. You should also contact your health care provider and the school to inform them of symptoms.
Please review the infographic below to learn more about the change and call your child’s school if you have further questions.
Thank you for supporting our continued efforts to keep students engaged and on track with their learning.
BOOK FAIR INFORMATION
Dear JHE Families:
Reading is the most important skill you can teach a child. Of all the skills children learn, it is the one you can influence the most. Giving kids access to good books and the opportunity to choose books will motivate them to read more. And like most acquired skills, the more kids practice reading, the better they’ll get.
We invite you to visit our Scholastic Book Fair and experience a celebration of reading that provides families the opportunity to get involved in a universal mission: encouraging kids to read every day so they can lead better lives.
Reading is vital to every child’s success and raising kids as readers means getting involved while they’re young. Now is the time. Since there will never be a substitute for a parent’s direct involvement in his/her child’s education, please make plans to participate in our Book Fair.

FACE MASKS
- Students are doing an AMAZING job of wearing their face masks. We are so proud of them.
- HELP from parents: Remind students to remember their face masks. We have a few requests each day for a mask because students forgot them at home or in the car. They know they need them.
- If possible, send an extra mask with your child to keep in their desk. We also recommend weekly washing. We appreciate your help with this.
LOST & FOUND
Here is a photo of the current Lost and Found. If you see anything that belongs to your student, remind them to grab it off the rack. Thanks for your help with getting these lost items to their right owner.
