SG R-II Family Connection
Parents & Guardians
Hello, SG R-II Family!
We just finished our first few weeks of school, and what a whirlwind! With the launch of my final year as superintendent, the first week of school was both exciting and bittersweet. As we welcomed students in from the buses, I found myself truly cherishing that first-day-of-school feeling. I’ve loved visiting the buildings and seeing everyone together again, sharing stories from their summer and transitioning so easily back to school and learning.
With the excitement and the spirit we’ve seen these first few weeks, this is going to be a great year for SG R-II, and we are looking forward to creating lasting memories of our time as Dragons! Make sure that you check out some of our photos from the first few weeks below!
I hope that you have a relaxing holiday weekend and enjoy some time with family and friends!
Dr. Julie Flieg
Superintendent
PROP SG Update
At its July 19, 2022 Regular Meeting, the Board of Education approved Brockmiller Construction, Inc. as the Construction Manager At-Risk (CMAR) for the projects encompassed within Prop SG.
- In the past, SG R-II has traditionally used a Design-Bid-Build Option, but after consulting with area superintendents, many suggested utilizing a CMAR, given the scope of projects encompassed by Prop SG. A CMAR acts as an intermediary for the district, working with the architects on the implementation of designs, issuing bids as packages to best suit the district’s needs, acting as the manager of subcontractors, negotiating on prices with market fluctuations, and providing monthly progress reports to the Board of Education.
- As a whole, the Board agreed that Brockmiller Construction, Inc. presented a holistic plan, tailored to our community, and inclusive of the needs of our students, employees, and citizens. To read more about the CMAR selection process, click here.
District administration has met with KRJ Architects and Brockmiller Construction, Inc. to review current plans and discuss progress. During these meetings, feedback from the various building administrators, employees and athletic personnel were discussed and integrated into the evolving plans. We anticipate a contract with Brockmiller Construction, Inc. soon, and will share design plans and construction timelines as they are finalized!
Tax Rate Set & Board of Education Updates
At the Aug. 30, 2022 Board of Education meeting, the Board approved setting the operating levy at $2.9617 and the debt service level at $0.4400 for a total levy of $3.4017 for the 2022-23 school year. As promised, the debt service levy (the fund used for long-term debt payments) will remain at 0.4400 cents for the upcoming school year and will not increase with the passage of Prop SG. The operating levy increased by 0.0046 cents for this school year, which equates to less than half a penny, for the 2022-23 tax rate. This adjustment comes directly from the state auditor's calculations, which generates the tax rate.
Dr. Flieg provided a presentation that included an overview of the district’s planning and projections for the 2022-2023 year, including preparing for uncertain tax revenues and additional expenses to cover litigation fees for the ongoing local tax protest. See the Board Briefs from the meeting here for more information. This unofficial document includes more context and details than our official Board Minutes. All Board documents are located on the “Board of Education” page of our district's website.
REMINDER: Meals for the 2022-2023 School Year
The federal free meals program expired June 30, 2022. Congress did not extend federal waivers that made it possible for schools to provide free meals year-round under the USDA’s Seamless Summer Option. Meal charges have begun again this school year. If families have not already, please complete the 2022-2023 application.
- Families should complete either the online application or a paper application — they do not need to complete both.
- All families are encouraged to complete an online application instead of a paper application if you are able. The online application is available in your Power School Parent portal, under Forms, 22-23 Free/Reduced Lunch Application.
- Families only need to complete one application per household.
- Call 573-883-4500 ext. 2008 or email lmeyerroth@sgdragons.org if you have any questions.
2022-23 Reopening Plan
During its July 19, 2022 Regular Meeting, the Board of Education approved the 2022-23 Reopening Plan. The Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) requires school districts to update their Reopening Plans every six months. We will continually evaluate this plan and integrate updates to reflect changing local conditions and evolving recommendations from the state and federal level. Please be sure to visit our COVID-19 webpage here.
Please Note: The ten days of COVID-19 leave will not be extended to this school year. If an employee needs to stay home from work due to COVID-19, please see the Employee Leave Options here.
We Need Substitutes!
Did you know that the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education has implemented changes to substitute certification requirements to address the statewide shortage of substitute teachers?
- Rather than the previously-required 60 credit hours, a candidate can instead enroll in a 20-hour online course to receive their certification. Check out more information about the alternative pathways to obtaining a substitute certification here!
- Also, the SG R-II Board of Education approved raising the daily substitute pay from $90 to $95 a day.
