NEWS FROM THE HEADS
My theme this week is change. There is no doubt that parents are facing change on an almost daily basis as they see their daughters grow up. The challenges facing young people are both the traditional ones and those that evolve from a developing technological and social culture. Young people have always strained at the restrictions placed upon them by wise and cautious parents, and have always wanted to explore and experiment. One constant and nagging worry for parents is how their child will react when they first encounter recreational drugs. To help you have a greater insight into the issue of drugs, and how you might deal with the issue within the fanily, we are holding an information evening with the DrugFam charity - http://www.drugfam.co.uk/ on Thursday 22 January. You have already had a letter home about this event and I do urge you to attend if you can. The drug scene and its impact upon families is an ever changing environment and this evening will perhaps both shock and inform ... >>>
This week we have been talking a lot about resilience and how to be a resilient learner. On Tuesday, I shared a poem with the girls, the key message of which really defined the characteristics of being a resilient person, and already we have seen an impact. This is all very empowering. “Gorilla” has been a wonderful animal to start our topic this term in the Nursery rooms. A variety of activities happened such as creating life sized ones which made the children laugh and want to paint and decorate. We have looked at real ones in their natural habitats using the iPads and pretended to move like them. The children were wonderfully well-behaved, engrossed in the activities they were doing and relaxed during our Open Day, showing our Nursery in a lovely light.
Transition children have looked at wild animals and their appearance. They have made collages of their skin and made junk models of them using skin patterned tissue paper.

Cashless Catering - Canteen Purchases
A new button, ‘Show Canteen Purchases’, has been added to the Cashless Catering system. This enables parents to see the last thirty days of their child’s dining room till transactions .
Burns Night - unfortunately due to insufficient bookings, we have had to cancel this event. Thank you to those of you who were hoping to join in the celebrations.

MEDICAL INFORMATION: Please be advised that should your child be absent from school with sickness/diarrhoea/sickness and diarrhoea, he or she should not return to school until 48 hours after the last bout of vomiting or diarrhoea. Our schools have adhered to these School Health Regulations for many years as it is important to stop the spread of any bacterial infection. We thank you for your cooperation in this matter. Tues 27 Jan - Year 10 'Looking Beyond GCSE' in the School Hall at 6.30pm. A letter has been sent home.

ADVANCE DATES & REMINDERS
Sat 28 Feb - Claires Court Regatta Race Night And now for something completely different! Our Race Night will be a rowing regatta style race night, at Senior Boys, with the usual cash bar and fish and chip supper. Tickets will cost £10 each to include supper. The evening will start at 7pm, finishing at 10:30pm.
TRIPS *Letter sent home this week
*Tues 27 Jan - Year 7 - 9 Choir 'Young Voices' at the O2 Final instructions and tickets for those who ordered, have been sent home in the post. The reply slip was due by today, Friday 16 January.
*13 - 16 Feb History Trip to Berlin: the final instalment of £183 is now due. Please return to School by Friday 23 January, indicating method of payment, and, most importantly, attaching a copy of your daughter's passport. Please note that any overdue interim payments of £200 should also be paid asap.
27-29 March 2015 - GCSE Geography trip to Margam Park deposit of £100 overdue - forms and payment asap please.
6-11/12 April - Hazewinkel Rowing Training Camp - if anyone who has not signed up is interested please see Chris Clark/Tom Jost asap.

Journey to the CREST STAR
Holiday Club brings a **NEW** and exciting opportunity for Years 1 & 2 on Tuesday 17 February with the British Science Association's CREST Star Award Scheme. During the February half-term holiday mid kidz will be able to get to grips with hands-on science investigations… on the start of our 'Journey to the CREST STAR'.
