Monday Memo
Week of September 14th, 2020 - Week Three
Message from Principal Jackson
I hope everyone has enjoyed their weekend so far. This week we embark on the full schedule. Small groups should be up and running and students should be receiving feedback on the work they are submtiting in Canvas and One Note. We will begin our Data Meetings this week with a discussion on what they will look like in a virtual world.
This week there are two different parent engagement events. The first one is optional. On Tuesday there will be the first PTO meeting of the year at 6pm. Please feel free to join us via zoom for this meeting.
On Thursday is the Back to School Night. It will begin at 5:30pm with all of the parents gathering to heard from the leadership team and support staff. At 6pm we will send them to individual classes. More info is available lower in the memo in the Family Engagement Section. Expectations can be found here.
Substitute folders are due on Friday. Click here to see the expectations document.
Keep up the great work and let us know how we can best support you all.
Respectfully,
Principal Jackson

Instruction
- Week 3 - This week instruction is in full effect and there should be a focus on implementing small group instruction.
- Youtube Videos - Please remember that Youtube videos are blocked on student devices (even when used at home). As a result, teachers will need to use Play Posit (available in Clever) to utilize YouTube videos for independent student work.
- Do Now/Closing - Be sure that students have access to a "Do Now" they can work on when they log in and the staff is letting students into the meetings. Consider including extensions for those early to meetings OR who finish early. Make this same plan for exit tickets when a meeting is ending.
- Testing - Be sure to adhere to the testing plan shared by the coaches.
Climate and Culture
SEL Breaks - SEL Breaks will be supported by the Systems of Care team. They are encouraged for students but not required (from an attendance point of view). Teachers will support in the absence of a member of the SOC team.
Reminder: Live lessons should not be recorded. They contain images and voices of students that may reveal personal information which would make it a FERPA violation.
Family Engagement
- Please continue to have families sign up for the Remind App!
Key Dates:
September 13th - Grandparents Day - consider thanking the grandparents in your class for all of their support always - but especially during distance learning!
September 17th - Back to School Night @5:30pm
Parents will all gather at from 5:30pm to 6:00pm with school leadership for a welcome and general announcements/updates. The schedule will be:
5:30pm-6:00pm - Whole School Meeting with Leadership Team
6:00pm - 6:30pm - Class/Grade Level Rotation 1
6:35pm-7:05pm - Class/Grade Level Rotation 2
During the rotations, you should plan on seeing different parents as they will be encouraged to attend for multiple students.
Teachers will create and post a Microsoft Teams Link on their Thursday schedule for Back to School Night. Parents will log in as their student to attend the event.
While meeting with parents, you should cover the following topics:
1) Contact methods (email, Remind, monthly newsletters, etc)
2) Remind parents to complete the Distance Learning Survey (will be shared with them during schoolwide meeting)
3) Instructional Learning Topics between now and at least November 6th, 2020.
4) Ways in which students will be graded and receive feedback
5) any other relevant information you want to share.

Useful guides/resources:
Conduct in a Digital Space
Student Privacy in a Digital Space
As we start SY20-21 with learning at home and are utilizing social media more frequently, please ensure that all teachers and staff members are confirming media releases for students in Aspen before sharing photos or videos of students during digital learning sessions.
Using the same guidelines, you can also retweet or repost families who are sharing their own highlights on social media and encourage them to tag your school, @DCPublicSchools, and use #DCPSatHome and #ReopenStrong.
