Data Chats
Thank you all for your time to reflect on Literacy Academy. We know how busy we all are, but it's so important to have these times to reflect on what we are doing in small groups so that we can continue to do the things that are working and modify what's not working. We would like to continue to have these data chats around Small group instruction so that we can improve student growth in Literacy.
Next week we will start WIN Academy with our 2nd Grade students. Our focus will be on Nonsense Word Fluency (NWF). We will be meeting Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday. You can always reach us by email or calling us in room 6. Have a great week!
Updates from our TSP Advisor-Juan Carrillo
This Monday we start by having our first ELAC meeting with parents in person in the MPR. We have 10 ELAC members this year and we will be holding officer elections.
Our SPSA evaluation is due at the end of the month. I am looking forward to meeting with some of you during this week's faculty meeting to review our Parent Engagement Goals in our SPSA plan. We will reflect on data from last year's School Experience Survey and discuss ways to meet our goals. For example, one of our goals was that 50% of students feel kids at this school are kind to each other. Did we meet the goal? Stay tuned and we will find out on Tuesday. Thank you.
Finally, because of our work with SPSA evaluation, the IAB assessments have been postponed until next week.
Message from Mr. Melendez Title 3 Instructional Coach
Justify Your Thoughts
Defend your thinking by using specific examples and evidence. When speaking and writing, our English Learners must justify their responses with specific evidence from the text and examples from your life/world. Here are evidence-based terms that will help our English Learners justify their thoughts:
- Because
- For instance...
- For example...
- The author said...
- It said on page ___ that...
- According to the text...
- From the reading I know that...
2021-2022 SPSA Measurable Goal
By June 2022, English Learners scoring proficient (Overall Level 4) on ELPAC will increase from 7% to 30% as measured by the Summative ELPAC assessment.
Self-Care Corner-Ms. Rodriguez-PSW
Self Care Tip: Be mindful of the new changes this season brings, gloomy dark skies have a way of affecting our mood if we let them. This week plan to start your mornings with something that sparks joy (ie. a good podcast on your commute to work or feel-good upbeat music to start your day with students in class).
Step into STEAM-Ms. Muro, STEAM Instructional Coach
Hello all,
Thank you everyone who completed the STEAM “Needs” Survey. Erica Lee and I will be using that data to support your work in the classroom and to plan our next PD. We will also be visiting classrooms next week during your STEAM/IIS block. I have been in a few classrooms and have seen some great interactive bulletin boards being developed. Here are some:
These are great beginnings. As we are building our boards, let’s consider adding the name of the Amplify unit and the 3-D Statements from the Unit Guide. The 3-D statements contain the verbs that help us and the kiddos understand the objective. For example, this is the 3-D statement from a 1st Grade Unit:
- Students investigate how animals and plants, as well as their offspring, use their structures to meet their needs for survival (structure and function).
- Students apply what they learn by developing models and constructing explanations to communicate their ideas about how aquarium animals use their defenses to survive (cause and effect).
Kid speak:
- We will investigate and use models to explain how animals and plants use their structures (and functions) to survive.

As always, if you have any questions or need support, shoot me an email or come by Room 5.

COVID Task Force Updates
- Concern-Two teachers notified me that students appeared in the morning line downstairs without masks. Someone in the front let them in without masks. All three gates check to see if students are wearing their masks upon entering the school. We all have extra masks for those students that are not wearing them. All teachers were provided with masks in case students need another one. Remember that we all need to work as a team to ensure that are students are wearing a mask and wearing them correctly.
- Concern-Teachers wanted to know status of the daily pass scanner. The daily questions parents have to answer is what gives an extra layer of safety, so that is why teachers are asking. A visual check is being conducted for those students that have a Daily Pass. Name, Title and Date are checked before allowing the students to enter school. Those students without a daily pass are checked on the Allowed/Disallowed list. I would welcome assistance from any staff member that is willing to scan the daily pass. I cannot scan with my phone and check names with my IPAD while I have a line of students waiting for me.
- Concern-Is there now an updated letter when notifying parents of a classroom that the case was in fact in their classroom. The letter the district provided had the general "at your school", not specifically stating the case was in the classroom their child is at. There is an updated letter that goes home to the students in the classroom with a positive case. The letter is addressed to the parents of the room. The content of the letter continues to state "at your school". I am following the District letter just in case of privacy issues.
- Concern-One case where teacher called office to ask regarding a student that was out a few days, asking if they were clear to come back. Office told teacher that mom had stated the COVID test was negative. Teacher is asking if parent's word is enough, it seems something should of been turned in or uploaded? We are helping our parents with uploading test results as much as possible. Sometimes there is a visual check with test results. The office works diligently to follow up with families to make sure the correct documentation is available. Please remember that follow up with families is the responsibility of all staff members. As teachers, you must continue to follow up with clearing absences.
- And kudos to Angel he has been quick with giving us needed supplies. Please continue to reach out to Angel with any requests for PPE. axp2917@lausd.net
- Update-Water bottles are not available. District has informed us that there are not water bottles available. Please remind students to bring their water bottles or they will need to drink water form the water fountains.
Thank you for all that you do to make sure that Malabar staff and students are safe. We are all responsible for following protocols and maintaining a safe and positive school environment. The COVID Task Force meets every two weeks to discuss concerns or issues. Please continue to reach out to members of the team.

Focus on Classroom Observations-Standard 3: Delivery of Instruction
I we visit classrooms, we will be focusing on the following two elements:
3b2. Discussion Techniques and Student Participation Techniques are used to ensure that all students share their thinking around challenging questionsEffective Practice: Teacher uses intentional, differentiated strategies to engage all students in discussion, attempting gradual release from teacher-directed to student initiated conversation. Students participate in intellectually challenging discussions.
3c1. Standards-Based Projects, Activities and Assignments Standards-aligned learning activities cognitively engage students in the lesson
Effective Practice: Instructional projects, activities and assignments are aligned to the instructional standards, require higher levels of thinking, are culturally relevant, and may include real-world application. Most students are cognitively engaged, constructing their own understanding and exploring content. The learning activities are differentiated, as necessary, to meet the learning needs of student subgroups.
These are the Glows and Grows form my observations this week:
Glows
- All classrooms are engaged in differentiation of instruction during Literacy Academy time.
- Most classrooms have a pocket chart or bulletin board displaying their groups and area of focus. This keeps everyone organized with clear expectations.
Grows
- Begin to progress monitor your intensive students. This way we know if our instruction is impacting student learning. We need to adjust our teaching to the needs of our students. Progress monitoring needs to be conducted every two weeks for our intensive students.
Focus for Next Week
This week, we will visit classrooms focusing on math. We begin this week with our three week PD cycle in the area of math.
