I BELIEVE You Matter!!
I Believe in Seeing the Problem, Owning the Problem
We believe in you matter, we believe in relationships, we believe in helping others be successful, we believe in living above the line, and we believe in keeping our day. This month, our focus combines these Top 20 facets with See the Problem, Own the Problem. We will use the Top 20 Frame, suggesting how we SEE something influences how we feel, how we FEEL influences what we do, what we DO influences what we get, and what we GET reinforces how we see it when as work to See the problem, Own the problem.
New Year's resolutions are hard to stick to. Some research has suggested that about 1/2 of adults make a New Year's resolution, but less that 10% keep up the resolutions for longer than a few months. Last fall, as workshops began, you were encouraged to join a movement in selecting just one word that would guide you throughout this school year. By choosing one word, you've applied that word to all parts of your life. The steps to selecting your word were quick. You identified what type of person you want to be, identified the characteristics of that person, and picked a word to represent who you wanted to become. BELIEVE quickly became Richmond Elementary's One Word this school year. You SEE the word BELIEVE on every staff and family update this year. How does seeing that word make you FEEL? Does the feeling influence what you DO? Does what you GET reinforce how you see things? Look forward to embedding this four-part Frame as part of our discussions throughout upcoming weeks. As for those resolutions: How do they fit into the One Word you selected in August? How does what you see, feel, do and get impact the success of your resolution?
RICHMOND RECOGNITION
To Mary, Tom, and Brent, for working diligently behind (and in front of) the scenes to get the heat in our classrooms fixed and to Dan, Carrie, and Anita, for teaching through the chaos, Thank You for making a difference today to create a better tomorrow!
Reading is Our Super Power!
Revisiting a topic from December, this week's reading focus is cross-disciplinary literacy. ReLeah Lent, author of the article Disciplinary Literacy: A Shift That Makes Sense notes "Disciplinary literacy takes a turn away from isolated content-area strategies and clarifies what teachers can do to help their students learn in a more effective way. It respects the varied ways that students read, reason, write, think, speak, and, most important, participate in specific content areas."
Lent suggests we teach our students how to specifically engage in each content area, which logically should look different in science than in math. Think in terms of disciplinary literacy. Ask yourself how scientists, historians, mathematicians, and students of English read, write, and think. Use the chart below as a springboard to thinking in terms of disciplinary literacy. Then consider the following process:
- Identify what students need to learn and do to become successful in their content areas
- Focus on how to teach these skills while teaching content—not as a sidebar to the content
- Determine the most effective instructional practices to help students practice and master such skills
- Engage in the authentic work of the discipline.
Lent closes with this powerful thought: "Through disciplinary literacy, we can create readers and writers who come to use literacy for its highest purpose—learning—with an expert by their side, a content area teacher who not only understands the subject but also how to use literacy to unlock it."
MENTAL HEALTH REFERRALS
Students already receiving counseling services from True Balance will not be effected. They will continue their own services.
