Melissa Sweet, the award-winning author and illustrator, is this year's speaker. Melissa Sweet often uses collages in her illustrations, and her artwork is colorful and beautiful. Check out some of her work at https://www.melissasweet.net/

The 3rd and 4th graders will be reading and discussing many of the books the Ms. Sweet has illustrated. Students will get to see a presentation by Melissa Sweet in mid-October.

Library Learning

Kindergarten Students started the year learning about behavior in the library and how to take care of library books. We also read some fun books about book care.

In the computer lab, the students have learned how to care for the Chromebooks, how to log in with a Clever badge, and how to access selected educational games.

Mrs. Kalsem's Kindergartners can currently check out 2 books per week - 1 Everybody & 1 Easy Reader. They come to the library and the lab on Wednesdays.

First Grade Students began the year reviewing library expectations and how to care for library books. We started discussing this year's Goldfinch Award books and will read a few of these great books. Click on the link to see book trailers.

First graders check out 5 books - 3 stay at school to read in the classroom and 2 go home to read with the family. If you would like your student to check out more books to bring home, let me know. First grade comes to the library on Wednesdays.

Sixth Grade: Sixth graders reviewed library expectations. Each student reviewed and signed a Technology Use Contract, pledging to use technology safely and wisely. Students are now reviewing digital citizenship by participating in choose-your-own-adventure scenarios through Digital Passport.

Volunteers Needed

The Shimek library is looking for volunteers in the library. If you could come and help for even 30 minutes a week, that would be fantastic! The task needed most often is reshelving the books the students have read and returned. Let me know if you would like to give it a try - it's fun and rewarding!
