Malware is any malicious software looking to take advantage of you, steal your identity, or even something as simple as just deleting files off your computer. Here are a few types of malware, what they are, what they look like, and how to avoid them.
Viruses
Viruses copy itself and need contact to spread. When you get a virus on your computer it can do just about anything, such as deleting files.
Trojan Horses
Trojan horses seem legit, but allows access to something else. If you are downloading a show you want to watch or a picture it can often have a virus or spyware tagging along that you don't know about.
Spyware
Spyware secretly obtains personal information that are attached to programs on your computer. They can sometimes just be used for marketing, to see which type of ads to send you based on what you are interested in, but they can also be tracking down personal information to eventually steal your identity. Some types of cookies contain spyware in them so you must be careful.
Anit-virus Software
There are many different types of Anti-virus software. In order for it to work, though, you must run it constantly and always check for updates. Sometimes anti-virus software can be bulky and slow down your computer so people like to turn it off; do not do this! If you anti-virus software is slowing down your computer, just find a new one.
Firewall
Firewalls allows you to decide what you computer communicates with such as iTunes. It brings up a pop-up asking if it is okay for your computer to communicate with this site. Often times they can prevent your computer from developing a virus.
Common Sense
The most important of these ways to avoid Malware is just by using common sense. If you see an add that says "smash the cockroach and win a free iPad" it's obviously not real and is just someone trying to hoodwink you into allowing a virus into your computer. Use your common sense, don't go for the fake iPad.
