Some important information for this week....
Orange Shirt Day
Monday, September 30th is Orange Shirt Day. A you’re probably aware, this day is to educate and promote awareness about the Residential school system and the impact on the Indigenous community. Staff will be spending some time, in age appropriate ways, discussing this important piece of Canadian history with our students. We encourage all students and adults to wear orange on Monday.
Bus evacuations
This Monday morning, we will be having bus evacuation drills at Kawartha Heights. This gives each class the opportunity to practice getting on and off a bus, in the case of an emergency on a class trip or the regular daily ride to and from school. Please take a minute to ask your child what they have learned.
Head Lice
Unfortunately, it's that time of the year, when those pesky head lice like to come to visit. Please check your child's head on a regular basis to ensure that no nits or live lice are there. We will be having a school wide "sweep" at the end of October. We will also notify you by letter, if any cases of head lice have been reported in your child's class. Thank you for your support in helping us to control this social nuisance.
CUPE Job Action
CUPE (Canadian Union of Public Employees) represents support staff in our schools, including custodians, secretaries, educational assistants, child and youth workers and early childhood educators. It is our understanding that CUPE will begin legal strike activities this Monday, September 30, 2019, with “work-to-rule” actions. We understand that parents have concerns about any possible job actions at our school. We want to assure you that we believe normal school operations for students can and will continue at this time.
During CUPE job action please be aware that our Breakfast program will be changing from providing trays of food each morning to classrooms, to having “self-serve” items such as apples, carrots, granola bars and yogurt tubes available from trays outside the office. Our goal is to ensure that all students still have access to any food they require throughout the day. In addition, please be aware that it may now take longer to unlock the front door when you buzz in between 9am and 3:20pm. I will do my best to respond in a timely manner, however, please be patient if there is some wait time.
Should you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact me at the school.
Upcoming Dates to Keep in Mind...
