Welcome to the 2022-23 School Year!
Welcome to the 2022-23 school year.
In this newsletter, you will find information regarding different topics that are informative and educational for our Cambrian School District's multilingual learners and their families. We hope that the information provided here will help inform and support you and your multilingual learner to develop their English language skills and also to support you and your child to continue to retain and develop their primary language. The Cambrian School District highly values and supports the cultural and language diversity in our community. We encourage and welcome your partnership.
Parent Quiz - Are you forming a School-Home Connection?
- _____ Do you talk with your child's teacher at least once in the early months of school?
- _____ Do you review the information you receive from the school and ask questions if something is unclear?
- _____ Do you make timely attendance a priority, and help your child start each day well-rested and ready to learn?
- _____ Do you discuss why school matters with your child, and say that you think your child will be a successful student?
- _____ Do you monitor your child's effort and progress and ask the teacher how to help?
How well are you doing?
More yes answers mean you are building an important bridge between home and school. For each no, try that idea.
"The nice thing about teamwork is that you always have others on your side." - Margaret Carty

The Upstanders Film
This year we are pleased to share that we have access to three films created to support our student's social-emotional well-being and the challenges they face. We will be providing either live or virtual access to each of these films during the school year.
- The Upstanders - Teaches about the power of connection and resilience to end bullying behavior, both online and in person.
- LIKE - Explores the addictiveness of social media and the role and impact of technology in our lives.
- Angst - Raises awareness and opens up the conversation about anxiety, helping people understand and manage their symptoms and learn when and how to ask for help.
The first film we would like to share is The Upstanders. The Upstanders is recommended for ages 10 and above.
We are pleased to provide home access to our families. Although the film is intended for ages 10 and up, parents of younger students will benefit from watching the film because it will help build awareness of the issue of bullying, and how to support their child to play a positive role.
If you would like to view the film, please visit The Upstanders' viewing site at https://bit.ly/3SNUYVY. If you choose to watch the film with your child, here is a Kicking Off the Conversation (Spanish) document designed to provide a parent with questions to explore the content presented in the film.
Transitional Kindergarten ENROLLMENT HAPPENING NOW!
Did you know that Transitional Kindergarten (TK) enrollment for the 2022-2023 school year is currently taking place and if you have a child who was born between 9/2/2017 - 2/2/2018 that they are eligible for TK this year?
In addition, as a condition of receiving state funds, Cambrian also provides the following:
- Maintain an average TK class enrollment of no more than 24 students.
- Maintain a staff-to-student ratio of 1:12. This means that there will be a ratio of two educators for every 12 students in each TK classroom, including credentialed a TK teachers.
TK Enrollment for the following years:
- Children who were born between 9/2/2018 - 4/2/2019 are eligible for TK in 2023-2024
- Children who were born between 9/2/2019 - 9/1/2020 are eligible for TK in 2024-2025
For more information about TK and whether you can enroll your child for TK, please visit our TK Website link: https://www.cambriansd.org/site/default.aspx?PageID=1771.
Reclassification to Fluent English Proficient
Every year, the Governing Board recognizes the outstanding efforts of Cambrian students who have earned the Reclassification to be Fluent English-Proficient students. These students have mastered the state standards for academic excellence by meeting four (4) criteria required by the State of California. Moreover, English learner students who have been reclassified as proficient often outperform other student groups on the annual State Smarter Balanced Assessment in English Language Arts and Math.
If your child is an English Learner student, you can contact your child's teacher and find out how you can partner with your child's teacher to help your child achieve this amazing academic goal. For more information on how you can support your student to meet these State criteria and about the Reclassification process, please visit our district website:https://www.cambriansd.org/site/default.aspx?PageID=3588
CSD English Learner Program
The goal of the English Learner Program in the Cambrian School District is to support English Learner (EL) students to rapidly develop grade-level English language proficiency by providing expert methodologies, research-based curriculum, and additional instructional time to practice these new skills.
We strive to help students:
- Develop fluency in English.
- Cultivate a positive sense of self-worth.
- Understand and respect other cultures.
- Achieve equal access to the core academic curriculum.

Great Opportunity for Parent Involvement! Join Your School English Learner Advisory Committee (ELAC)
Whenever there are 21 or more English learners at a school site, there needs to be a functioning English Learner Advisory Committee (ELAC). This committee includes English learner parents and staff who advise the principal on school programs and services and the development of the school plan for English learners. Parents of English learners are elected to be a part of the committee and one of the members serves as the District English Learner Advisory Committee (DELAC) representative. Please contact your child’s school principal for more information on ELAC and how you can get involved in supporting your child's education.
