A monthly update from Foothills Student Ministry
Student Focused Youth Ministry
Last night I met with our Middle School Volunteers (who are awesome by the way, if you haven’t got a chance to meet them please stop in some week and introduce yourself) and part of a training exercise we did was role playing a Middle School Small Group. Yes each of us got to pull up a chair and act out a prescribed role of a 11-14 year old student who may attend our program. While it offered up some great laughs, it was eye opening for each of us to attempt to see the group experience from a student’s perspective. This is a lens which I try and keep front of mind: what is it like to be a Middle Schooler? What is important to them when they show up each week? What do they want and need to experience?
As a youth pastor it can be challenging at times to navigate the often-conflicting expectations of students, parents, church staff, volunteers. It can be hard to keep our eye on the ball and remember that we call it “Middle School Ministry” for a reason. At times you may hear about something we did or said at youth group and wonder: “What were they thinking???” While I am not claiming we will always get it right, know that our heart is to bring Jesus to where the students are at. Sometimes, let’s be honest, most of the time it looks messy and chaotic. It can seem like nothing is sticking. But we are playing the long game. Sometimes we plant seeds which we will never see germinate. God however always does the heavy lifting in our spiritual growth and I am encouraged by Paul’s words here:
Each of us did the work the Lord gave us. I planted the seed in your hearts, and Apollos watered it, but it was God who made it grow. It’s not important who does the planting, or who does the watering. What’s important is that God makes the seed grow. The one who plants and the one who waters work together with the same purpose. And both will be rewarded for their own hard work. For we are both God’s workers. And you are God’s field. You are God’s building. – 1 Corinthians 3: 5a-9
Middle School Large Group STARTS IN MAY!!!
We are excited to enter a new phase for our Middle School Ministry! Be sure to check out the calendar below for dates through Sept! We ask for your prayers and also your consideration in volunteering as we will need to add some more members to our amazing team as we expand.
Hey Hey Hey!
INCREDIBLE things are happening weekly at our Online Education Assistance Program. Dan Leighton and his team are working hard to help kids be successful during remote education. Many students have found both academic success and redemptive, caring adults to keep them on task. As students head into a final trimester of hybrid education, OEAP will continue helping students. The new schedule looks a little different this go around as both high school and middle school will be combined.
Students with the last name starting with M-Z will attend 7:15 - 2:15 Mondays and Tuesdays and last names A-L will attend Thursdays and Fridays. Great help for your student costs just $100/ month. Email firstname.lastname@example.org with questions or sign ups!
