Bolivar Buzz
January 2024
Dear Families,
Happy New Year! I hope you all had a joyful holiday season with loved ones! We are jumping back into the groove here at Bolivar because we have a lot of fun to look forward to this month! We will be kicking off PARP (Pick a Reading Partner) on January 16th - the entire staff is so excited to transform the school into a magical place for reading! We encourage all families to participate in PARP with their child, including the school PARP events and fun PARP activities!
In January, many classrooms will discuss healthy starts for the new year and goal setting. I encourage you to talk with your child about what they want to accomplish this year and their own personal goals. Here is a great article about supporting children in their goal setting. This month, we will also celebrate the legacy and life of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.. Students will learn about his teachings of peace and gain an understanding as to why it is important to recognize this holiday.
Please don't forget to send your child into school with appropriate outer wear, as classes will continue to go outside in the winter! Also - don't forget an extra pair of shoes so student's don't need to wear their wet boots all day.
As always, feel free to contact me with feedback!

A Message from the School Nurse
Managing the Spread of Illness in Schools
Staying Home When Sick:
Rest can help you and your child get better sooner, and it helps prevent the spread of germs.
- Children with vomiting should stay home for 24 hours after vomiting has subsided
- Child with diarrhea should stay home until the diarrhea has stopped (stools are formed).
- Children should be fever free for 24 hours without the use of fever reducing medications or until their doctor says it is okay to go back to school.
- Children with an unexplained rash should stay home until the student is seen and cleared by a licensed health care provider.
- Children should stay home for at least 5 days if they are diagnosed with COVID-19.
- If your child is having difficulty breathing, call your doctor right away.
Reminder:
The New York State Department of Education requires a physical exam for new entrants and students in Elementary Grades Pre-K or K, 1 and 3. Please send a copy of your child's physical to the nurse.
Did You Know?
According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, "Hand washing with soap could protect about 1 out of every 3 young children who get sick with diarrhea and almost 1 out of 5 young children with respiratory infections."
Please talk with your child about appropriate hand washing with soap and water and model this at home! Hand washing is one of the most important steps we can take to avoid getting sick and spreading germs to others
Reminders from the Physical Education Department
Please notify school if your child has limitations in P.E. or other physical activity, due to a recent broken bone or surgery (ex: tonsils removed). All restrictions should come from a doctor's note that is sent to the school.
Please send your child to school with sneakers on days when they have P.E. so they can participate in the fun!
