New Mentoring Program Forming
by Jodi Meaders/Staff Writer
GIVE Center East is matching mentors with young people who need or want a caring adult in their lives. The school employs teachers who have a special passion for teaching and mentoring the youth in Gwinnett County. This is not just done through academics. Mentoring is another way that teachers at GIVE East support students every day. A new mentoring program is forming at the school for young men of all grade levels called the JAGS, which stands for Justified Aspiring Gentlemen Scholars. Emanuel Williams, who is in charge of Behavior Intervention at the school, believes that every child has the ability to lead, but they must have support in order to do so. In a recent interview, he said, “kids seek mentors and love to be leaders but they must learn how to lead.” This new mentoring program requires students to meet specific academic, social and behavioral requirements. It provides goal focused compensations that help groom kids for leadership. Students that participate are able to dress up in a suit and tie on certain days of the month in order to show their pride and leadership abilities. They look impressive on the outside which helps them feel encouraged to succeed on the inside. Other students are able to look at them as role models. In the future, the club will also have special programs for participants. There will be speakers who come and speak to the group, such as police officers, judges and other leaders in the community. One of the key concepts at GIVE East is that each child is a genius in some area. Programs such as this one help students find their “genius” and let it shine.

Atlanta is buzzing with more and more excitement as the leaves start to fall and winter starts to make its descent. There is something else happening that also makes people feel excited around town. They are preparing for football. This isn’t just any season of football, because the Super Bowl is happening in Georgia’s own backyard. The game is scheduled to be played on February 3, 2019, at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, Georgia. This will be the third Super Bowl in Atlanta.
So as helmets clash and teams battle to come to our back door, Atlanta residents are looking everywhere for spare change because tickets are expensive. According to VividSeats, the cheapest price for a ticket is $3,864 and the price shoots all the way up to $10,082 depending on where you want to sit. Because of this, many people would rather just stay home and watch it on television.
So the big question for this year’s Super Bowl is who is going to be playing. Top teams right now in the AFC are the New England Patriots, Pittsburgh Steelers, Kansas City Chiefs, and the Houston Texans. In the NFC the Los Angeles Rams are leading the pack with Washington Redskins, Chicago Bears, and the New Orleans Saints not far behind.
Also this year in our new Mercedes-Benz Arena, Maroon 5 will be performing the halftime show. They have never performed at the Super Bowl before so this will definitely be a first for Adam Levine and his boys. There is also suspicion that he will bring Cardi B along with him, knowing that their song “Girls Like You” is very popular and well liked. Superbowl halftime shows are always big talking points on social media.
So, whether you’re at home eating hot wings or in the arena surrounded by screaming fans we should all remember what is really important. It is that you enjoy yourselves and your team goes home with a win in their back pocket so that you can go home with bragging rights.
