AVID Strategy of The Month: Philosophical Chairs
Subject Matter Application:
In theory, learning happens when students use critical thinking to resolve subsequent conflicts, which arise when presented with alternative perspectives, ideas, or contradictions to what they have previously learned or believed. "Philosophical Chairs" is a technique to allow students to critically think, verbally ponder, and logically write their beliefs.
Procedure:
1. Students read and annotate a Social studies text selection prior to the facilitation of a philosophical chairs discussion.
2. After reading and taking notes, students are presented with a level 2 or 3 question that will elicit thought and discussion.
3. Chairs will be arranged with a left side and a right side
4. students are told they will argue the merits of the question, and that their choice will illustrate their position. If they believe that the answer to the question is yes, they will sit on the right. If they believe the answer is no, they will sit on the left. They will have the opportunity to move as their minds change.
Rules of Engagement:
1. Be sure you understand the central statement or topic before the discussion begins. Decide which section you will sit in.
2. Listen carefully when others speak and seek to understand their arguments even if you don’t agree.
3. Wait for the mediator to recognize you before you speak; only one person speaks at a time.
4. You must first summarize briefly the previous speaker’s argument before you make your response.
5. If you have spoken for your side, you must wait until three other people on your side speak before you speak again.
6. Be sure that when you speak, you address the ideas, not the person stating them.
7. Keep an open mind and move to the other side or the undecided section if you feel that someone made a good argument or your opinion is swayed.
8. Support the mediator by maintaining order and helping the discussion to progress.
