Munz's Weekly Update

Week of September 12th

What's Been Happening in Room 125....

Writing Update--This week we began Narrative writing. The children have been working on planning stories that have really happened to them. They have had some great ideas so far! What does writing look like in our classroom? They watch me model the writing of a story, they have time to write in their draft book, then a few students each day have a chance to share their writing with the class. At that time, the "audience" gets to respond with compliments and questions about what was shared.

Phonics--these last few weeks, the children have been reviewing and practicing the 5 phonics skills for short and long vowels. I spend a big chunk of time at the beginning of the year having them practice with smaller, easy words. By working with smaller words, they will be able to decode larger words as they come across them in books. During this time, the children have also been learning and practicing the procedures for completing independent work while I work with small groups and individual children. They have been doing really well! Soon I will be differentiating their Word Work lists to be more at their level. This week your child will be bringing home a stapled packet of work from these last few weeks of practice.

Reading--We have been working on recording our thinking about what we read. They have been keeping track of connections, questions, and predictions on post-its before, during, and after they read a book. The children have also been using Raz-Kids online book resource. I will soon send home your child's login information and they can access it at home.

Conner Prairie

Many permission slips have been coming in. Please remember to turn in money AND slips at the same time. Thank you for your help with this! If you signed up to chaperone, I will send out more information closer to October 5th. It will be a fun day!

Parent Conferences

Believe it or not, it is time to schedule conferences for the Fall. I will send out a Sign-up Genius for you to schedule your time. Be looking for this during the first part of next week.

Monday I sent home the first Homework Calendar. I do not give a lot of homework---I use it mainly as a tool for them to practice responsibility. Any items I send home (or have them do in the Homelinks Math book) are things we have already practiced at school. In the event your child would like more practice opportunities at home, I will also be giving them the login information for Math tools they can access. In addition, Raz-Kids can be used as part of their at-home reading and can be recorded on the Reading Log.
