Waterbury Roar

Volume 1, Issue 26, March 5th, 2021

A Roar from our Principal, Dr. Jon Pokora

Hello Waterbury Community!

I hope everyone is enjoying the relative warmth and sunshine in March!

Every year the Illinois State Board of Education requests that parents complete the 5Essentials survey. The 5Essentials Survey identifies five indicators that lead to improved outcomes for all students, including improved attendance and larger test score gains.

The five indicators that positively affect school success are:

  1. Effective Leaders
  2. Collaborative Teachers
  3. Involved Families
  4. Supportive Environments
  5. Ambitious Instruction

Research derived from the Five Essentials for School Success has proven that schools strong on at least three of the 5Essentials are 10 times more likely to improve student outcomes.

In order to have valid data to report, we need a minimum of 20% participation from our parent community. Please take a moment to fill out the survey, the link is provided below.

Have a great weather and the weekend!

Dr. Jon Pokora

Virtual Waterbury Wow Factor

We are very excited to share that permission slips to sign up for our Virtual Waterbury Wow Factor Performance will be coming home on Monday, March 8th! If your student is remote, and they would like to sign up, please feel free to email Mrs. DelValle at kdelvalle@esd20.org

Youth Art Month

The Council for Art Education encourages support for school art programs and administers the Youth Art Month in March annually. The national theme this year is "Art Connects Us" which is especially relevant for us all during the pandemic. Art in school helps with problem solving skills, creativity, observation and communication. Plus it's fun!

ESD20 is recognizing Youth Art Month by celebrating artwork created by our students across the district. Throughout March, we will share masterpieces created by students in grades K-8 in the #esd20creates gallery and on social media.

Please help us to honor our talented students by using the hashtag #esd20creates and appreciating their work!

Missing anything? Please contact Mrs. Carone or Mrs. Cronin if you believe your student has misplaced an item.

March is Nutrition Awareness Month!

Focus on Healthy Food Choices - Choose the GO, SLOW, and WHOA foods:

GO FOODS – are the lowest in fats and added sugar. They are nutrient dense with a better source of vitamins, minerals, and other nutrients important to health. Examples of GO foods are fruits, vegetables, whole grains, fat-free and low-fat milk products, lean meats, poultry, fish, beans, egg whites, or egg substitute.

SLOW FOODS - are higher in fat, added sugar, and calories. SLOW foods include vegetables with added fat, white refined bread flour, low- fat mayonnaise, 2% low fat milk products, peanut butter, pizza, baked chips, and mac and cheese. Have slow foods sometimes.

WHOA FOODS – are the highest in fat and sugar. They are calorie dense foods and low in vitamins, minerals, and other needed nutrients. Have WHOA foods once in a while, and when you do have them, have small portions. Examples of WHOA foods are whole-milk products, fried foods, bakery sweets, candy, soda, chips, sugary cereals, and creamy salad dressings.

Shut Down your Chromebooks Properly Each Night

Please have your student follow the directions on how to properly shut down their Chromebooks each night. A lot of the technology issues we have been experiencing lately are just a matter of having the Chromebooks shut down properly so that updates can occur. See the pics and pdf below on how to do this in the proper manner. Thank you so much for your help and cooperation.
