Partnership Principles
Choice: Because partners are equal, they make their own individual choices and make decisions collaboratively.
Voice: Instructional Coaches view coaching as a process that helps teachers to find their voice, not a process determined to make teachers think a certain way.
Dialogue: In a partnership, one individual does not impose, dominate or control. Partners engage in conversation, learning together as they explore ideas. Coaches listen more than they talk!
Reflection: Instructional Coaches encourage collaborating teachers to consider ideas before adopting them.
Praxis: Teachers should apply their learning to their real-life practice as they are learning.
Reciprocity: One of my goals is to learn along with the collaborating teachers. Instructional Coaches should expect to get as much as they give.
Instructional Coaching Cycle
Identify
This is the step in the process where the coach and teacher get a clear picture of reality, identify a student-focused goal, and identify a teaching strategy to help hit that goal.
Learn
This is when the instructional coach helps the teacher to learn the strategy by describing it, often with a checklist, and by giving the teacher a chance to see it modeled in some way.
Improve
This is where the teacher implements the teaching strategy and the coach and teacher innovate and problem solve until the goal is hit. Sometimes this means trying out different strategies that the first one identified.
Over The Next Couple Of Weeks...
Or
In The Meantime...
Our focus for this first semester, will be campus and team goals. Individual goals are still ok as well! If you have an individual goal, please reach out to me! You will be meeting with your teams soon, and I would love to join you to discuss the process further. After this initial meeting, I would love for your team to start brainstorming some team goals.
