21st Century Literacy
Making Classrooms as Dynamic as Our World
How do we teach digital literacy to digital natives?
While technology and Web 2.0 tools seem to have a limitless appeal to all ages, there is not a user's manual that helps guide our actions and ways of thinking online. Our digitally native students may be superheroes at multitasking, gaming, texting, social media, and selfies, but they are struggling to sort fact from fiction, think critically, decipher cultural influences, detect commercial intent and analyze social implications (@ahoneysett,Edudemic,2014).
Our world is changing at an unprecedented pace. To prepare our students, lessons must go beyond the "3 R's" and foster 21st century skills. Skills like critical thinking, communication, collaboration and creativity will be essential for students to take on the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead.
