The Northwood Elementary Connection

December 2021 Newsletter

From the Desk of Principal Miranda Roscoe

Hello Northwood Elementary families-

I hope that you had an enjoyable Thanksgiving break. Since we have returned from break, we are working hard to make continuous academic progress and to maintain a respectful, kind and safe school environment. There are several incentive programs in place to encourage and recognize positive behavior at Northwood Elementary.

  • Proud Pioneers is a monthly recognition program sponsored by Student Council. Teachers select students that demonstrate positive behavior and excellent citizenship at school. Names of students are announced at the end of each month during the morning announcements. Students receive a prize and a certificate.

  • The School-wide Positive Behavior Ticket Incentive Program started November 9th, students are recognized by staff for demonstrating positive behavior and specific character traits. Students can receive tickets from any Northwood Elementary staff member. The tickets are put into a grade level container and on Fridays Ms. Roscoe pulls winning tickets during the morning announcements.

  • The newest of our Positive Behavior Incentive Programs is the School-wide Classroom Competition Program. Each month Ms. Roscoe will announce a focus area for the building. The focus for the month of December are our hallways, including students’ cubby areas. Staff members will be looking for classes that are quiet, walking/standing in straight lines, and keeping their hands and feet to themselves in the hallways. Staff members will also be checking cubby areas for clean floors and organized cubbies. When a class is caught following the procedures/rules, their class will be awarded a tally on their classroom ice cream cone that is displayed outside of their classroom. The classroom with the most tallies will receive an ice cream treat at the end of the month (one K-2 classroom, one 3-4 classroom). We are excited to “catch” our students showing positive behaviors.

Sincerely,

Miranda Roscoe

Principal Northwood Elementary

Ohio Child ID Kits First Grade Students

Students in first grade will receive Ohio Child ID kits this week. Information about the Ohio Child ID kit can be found below:

The Ohio Attorney General's office is providing every first-grade student in Ohio with a Child ID Kit. If ever needed, the Child ID Kit will give authorities important information to assist their efforts in locating a missing child. Unfortunately, statistics show more than 800,000 children in America go missing each year which is one child every 40 seconds and very few parents have a copy of their child's fingerprints.

This Child ID KIT allows parents to collect specific information by easily recording the physical characteristics and fingerprints of their children on identification cards. The kits were distributed to all of our first grade students in Elyria Schools. The kits are to be completed at home with a parent or guardian and kept at home for safekeeping. Please do not return these to the school as the identification information is retained by the parent/guardian.

The Child ID Kit allows parents to collect specific information by easily recording the physical characteristics and fingerprints of their children on identification cards that are then kept at home. Only the parent or guardian will have a copy of their child’s kit. If you are interested in purchasing a kit for other children in your household, visit the following website @ https://childidprogram.com/.
