Spanish 2 Online: Marshburn Memo
North Carolina Virtual Public School
Sunday, June 7, 2015.
You are enrolled to take Spanish 2 online this summer with me. I am Holly Marshburn. I live in Carolina Beach with my kids, mother, and dog. I have taught K-12 for North Carolina for 18 years. I have a Bachelors of Spanish, Masters of Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL), and a Doctorate of Education in Instructional Technology and Distance Education. My hobby is riding my motorcycle.
Online courses are unique from face-to-face courses because of the level of independent work. You must maintain self-discipline and organization while sustaining your motivation throughout the semester. I hope you are ready for a tough two months! There are peer tutors available to help you with the course. It would be a great idea to go ahead and sign up for one. They work cheap (free)! And who doesn't like free stuff??!!
Expect to spend about three hours a day or 15 hours a week working in the course. If you are planning a vacation during this time, make sure you work ahead in the course. Assignments are due on Fridays by 11:55pm and unfortunately, work not submitted becomes a zero.
I would love to hear about you! I'd also like to discuss your thoughts on taking Spanish online this summer. Please share any concerns you may have.
I need to know your favorite form of communication (text, call, and/or email) and the best addresses, numbers, days, and times to reach you. Don't email your personal information. Text it to me instead. Expect to hear from me often during the course. Communication is essential for our success!
P.S. You will receive 100 brownie points for replying to this announcement with some comment. A simple "got it" will suffice.
