" Everyday Use"
Characterization Analysis
Mamma
Quote that best Represents the Character:
"In real life I am a large, big-boned woman with rough, man working hands. In the winter I wear flannel nightgowns to bed and overalls during the day. I can kill and clean a hog as mecilessly as a man. My fat keeps me hot in zero weather. I can work outside all day, breaking ice to get water for washing; I can eat pork liver cooked over a open fire minutes after after it comes steaming from the hog. One winter I knocked a bull calf straight in the brain between the eyes with a sledgehammer and had the meat hung up to chill before nightfall."
Type Of Character: Round & Static
Explanation/Reasoning:
Mamma is a round character because she is more complex than some of the other characters. Even though Dee wants Mamma to change she resist and stays true to herself no matter what Dee says that is the way she wants them to live. Mamma is a Static charactor because no matter what Dee says Mamma doesn't change.
Type of Characterization: Direct
Explanation/Reasoning:
The quote I used tells you that Mamma is a strong, large, manly woman who is better at a mans job than a womens job. Mammas conflict with the bull calf shows shes strong and she says her fat keeps her hot in zero weather that tells us she is a larger woman. Mamma says she can kill and clean a hog as mercilessly as a manthat tells us she is more of a manly woman.
