Mustang Mathematicians
Volume 2, Issue 3 (January 2018)
--The Spring Semester has Begun--
The spring semester is upon us and the Math Department is busy making sure all of our students are prepared for the months ahead. Please make sure that if you are absent, you are contacting your teacher and making up any missing homework or tests/quizzes as soon as possible. We don't want any students to get behind during this busy time of year!

FHS Math Department Enjoys a Day of Professional Learning
The Math Department would like to thank the district and the community for the support of professional learning days throughout the school year. We enjoyed another day of learning on February 2nd as we continue our work toward the goal of implementing differentiation strategies in all levels of the math classroom. Teachers learned from each other as they presented activities they had implemented in their classrooms thus far. Content teams looked back at their progress in the fall and used that reflection to look forward to the spring. It was a great day of learning for our team!

What's Happening Around the Math Department?
Algebra 2, Nearpod, and Matrices
Students in Mrs. Bullington's Algebra 2 classes explored matrices recently. During this topic, Mrs. Bullington took them through an activity on NearPod, an interactive lesson builder. Students progress through a teacher-created, teacher-led lesson and work problems which are sent to Mrs. Bullington in real time. This provides her with immediate feedback on the mastery level of her students throughout the lesson activity.
AP Calculus BC Students Dive into Webwork
Mrs. Gillespie's BC students are working vector calculus problems in a program used by many major universities. This gives students exposure to the calculus material, as well as exposure to a learning management system that many will see next year in college.
Synthetic Division Fun in Pre-AP Algebra 2!
Mrs. Nickerson's and Mrs. Molen's classes participated in a new activity that tested their mastery level of synthetic division. The activity is a twist on the old dot game we used to play as kids, but involves solving math problems correctly in order to be able to place your line. Students really enjoyed this activity and the competition to win was fierce!
Conic Sections in Pre-AP Precalculus
After spending some class time working on a blueprint for their upcoming conic section project, students practiced their knowledge of conic sections with a card sort. Students were to match an equation, graph, and description together. Prior to this activity, students used the Chromebooks to do an exploratory activity on conic sections where they made observations to help them connect aspects of the graph to the equations given.
