Thornhill Elementary PFC Newsletter
Volume 26, Issue 26, February 26, 2019
From the PFC President
I think it’s safe to say that with the teachers’ strike going on, the majority of us are experiencing something we have never experienced before.
But the strike has had what I think is an unexpected positive effect: It has shown the strength of the Thornhill community. Parents and students have come together to provide help and support for not only our teachers, but for each other. This support has come in the form of everything from walking the line with our teachers, to operating a “solidarity school” location at St. John’s Church, to respecting the needs and decisions of school staff members who need to come to work.
Sometimes, being there for each other is more than enough. And the people who make Thornhill part of our community continue to show that they will be there when needed.
I want to acknowledge the efforts of four Thornhill parents in particular. Pamela Schwartz took the reins of getting the solidarity school set up at St. John’s, and Mona Marbach has been crucial to organizing the location’s set up and operation. If you really want to see what Thornhill’s community is all about, check out things over at St. John’s during the day. On the picket line, Elyse Bart has done a wonderful job organizing all the shifts and logistics in order to show a strong presence outside our school for our teachers.
And whether or not you have sent your kids to St. John’s, take a minute to thank church rector Scott Denman for willingly opening his doors to all of us. We should all have neighbors as good as Scott.
Mahalo,
Rex Crum
