The Rideau Report

May 2019

Principal's Message

"Be the change you wish to see in the world." Mahatma Gandhi

With all the rain and warmer temperatures in April, it seems like all of a sudden the green-ness of Spring has hit. As we see the changes in nature all around us, Rideau too will focus on Change this month with our students.

At our assembly later this month, we will begin "Make Change" month with our students. Divisions will choose a project or charity that means something to them, in our local community, and we will see how a dedicated effort can help make a positive change. We are excited to see the impacts we can have in our community, building off the successes of our Pitch-In Kingston day and other environmental activities in April.

In our classrooms we continue to work hard, heading into the final stretch of the year. Students in grades 3 and 6 will complete the annual EQAO assessments later this month, and all of our students will begin culminating tasks in their various subjects. It is amazing to see the growth and learning that has taken place over the year, and we are very proud of where the students are now.

We continue to work to make our communications with families as effective as possible. We hope this newsletter, our website, and the Limestone App are all steps in that direction, and we are interested in your feedback. You can always email or call the school at 613-546-5901.

May is a big month for athletics at Rideau. Early in the month, our girls' and boys' basketball teams will wrap up their seasons with tournaments at Duncan MacArthur gym. Later in the month, we will host our annual Track and Field day for students in grades 3-6 at Caraco Field. This is always a highlight of the Spring for many of our students. We always need volunteers to help make this a great day, so if you are available and willing to help for all or part of Monday, May 13, please let the office know. Top finishers in each event will continue to train towards the Regional and District meets to be held in June. Finally in May, many of our classes are outside daily, running laps around our track or the block. They are trying to run a marathon or half-marathon. At the end of the month, several classes will join with students from across the District to complete the Marathon Club Final Lap at Caraco Field. We are very proud of all the athletic achievements of all our students!

Discover Kindergarten at Rideau!

Big picture
Our annual Discover Kindergarten event will be held this year on May 22, from 5-6 p.m. This is an opportunity for parents who have registered for kindergarten in the fall to bring their children to Rideau for a first taste of school. Families will receive important information, such as school hours, what to bring, and what to expect in today's kindergarten classroom, and children will get to explore some of the activities in a classroom, ride a school bus, and play in the kinder yard! We look forward to meeting so many of our new Rhinos there!
