State MathCounts-Congrats Aidan McGrane!
Congratulations to 7th grader, Aidan McGrane, for advancing and competing in the State MathCounts competition held in Des Moines at Des Moines Area Community College on Thursday, March 15th. Aidan was the only Franklin students to advance to state. Aidan, under the direction, of his coach, Mr. Charlie Smith competed in the district competition held at Prairie in February. Recent results show that Aidan performed very well in Des Moines and will be back stronger than ever as an 8th grader! Congrats, Aidan!
On to State Optimist Speech-Ahmed Elsheikh!
Congratulations to 6th grader Ahmed Elsheikh for advancing all the way to the State Optimist Speech Competition to be held in Des Moines, Iowa on Saturday, April 21st. Ahmed speaks very eloquently about his grandfather and how he started out with so little but was able to eventually attend college and become a successful architect. Ahmed and his brothers and sisters have been very inspired by their grandfather and he relates it so well to this year’s theme: “My Roots of Optimism.” Ahmed began competing at the local level, then competed in the Zone finals in Fairfax, next it was the regional competition in Iowa City, and now finally advancing to the State Optimist competition in Des Moines. Along the way, Ahmed competed against students who varied in age from 6th grade to seniors in high school. At the regional competition, Ahmed competed against two seniors in high school and was victorious. We wish Ahmed the best at the state competition this weekend!
From the Clinic
Parents of 6th Grade Students
Before incoming 7th and 12th grade students can begin school in the fall (2018-19 school year), they must meet the mandatory state meningococcal vaccination requirement. Students without proof of vaccination, or a state exemption, will not be allowed to attend classes in the fall.
If you have a student that will be entering 7th or 12th grade in the 2018-19 school year, please check with your primary healthcare provider NOW about meningococcal vaccination (and Tdap vaccine for incoming 7th graders). You may bring in proof of meningococcal/Tdap immunization to your student’s school health office at any time before the end of this school year.
If you are unable to have vaccines paid for through your insurance, have Medicaid insurance, or no insurance, your student may qualify to receive the vaccine through Metro Care Connection, Cedar Rapids Community School District’s School-based Health Clinic. Metro Care Connection will hold outreach vaccine clinics at middle schools this spring. A permission form must be completed/signed before a student may receive the vaccine. Please contact your school health office or the Metro Care Connection Program office at 319-558-2481 for any questions.
Minnow Tank
Please join Iowa BIG in celebrating young middle school girls in our community! Minnow Tank 2018 is a project-pitch competition where middle school girls will present their ideas to a panel of professional women judges for the opportunity to win prizes to excel their projects into the community. This year, there are four wonderful teams from schools all around the community. Projects include creating book shelves in local places to give everyone a fair access to books, creating a local music event to teach about the culture of music, connecting kids in the community to disengage them from technology, and creating dolls from scratch to donate to children and their siblings in the hospital. Most of these projects require donations, connections, and most of all support from the community. We are looking for a big crowd to show all of these girls their ideas are worth sharing! Please forward this email to friends and family, and come out to the Indian Creek Nature Center and join us in celebrating the young women in our community.
