Principal Musings -Do What's Best for Kids!
Dear Bengal Families,
I hope this finds everyone enjoying the holiday season! I am writing this on Sunday December 13 which is officially Lucy Beckham Day in the Town of Mount Pleasant. It seems like only yesterday that Ms. Beckham passed away but I believe that is because her legacy lives on in us everyday here at Lucy Beckham High School. We recently added a plaque beside her portrait in the front office and I wanted to share with those who may not be aware just how special she was and still is to us all.
LUCY GARRETT BECKHAM
“Do what is best for kids,” is the motto Lucy Beckham embodied each day. She was a visionary who not only recognized the unique potentials in each of her students and staff, but she created avenues for them to realize those potentials and build a successful future – whatever that looked like for each individual. Ms. Beckham was honest, compassionate, and not afraid to stand firm and challenge the status quo if it meant the best for her students. She was a natural leader and a problem solver. With intuitive foresight, she spearheaded the initial plans for this school to be established. Across her four-decade career in education, she positively impacted the lives of tens of thousands of students, teachers, faculty members and families – and countless more who will attend this school. Lucy Beckham is a legend who lives on in all of our Bengal hearts. Our work at Lucy Beckham High School strives to embody what she lived for as we continue to “do what is best for kids.”
We were disappointed to have to postpone our school dedication but we wanted to be sure that as many students, staff, families and community members could participate. We are anticipating a spring dedication if safe to do so.
We work hard every day to do what is best for our students. As you know, we have stellar instructors that are simply masterful in teaching and learning and a staff that is second to none supporting our teachers and students. Thank you for allowing us the honor to educate and love your children!
Happy Holidays, Merry Christmas, and Happy New Year!
Your very proud principal,
Mrs. Dassing

Attendance is Key! Keep it Under 5!
Attendance is key for academic success. We understand that there are number of reasons a student might be absent but here are some key points to remember.
- A students' attendance is entered based on the track they are designated for (In - Person, Temporary Remote or Virtual). If they are absent and logging on virtually but are coded as an in-person student the teacher will still mark them absent. Once Kim Walz has your attendance form and medical note to verify the absence she will then adjust the unexcused absence.
- The attendance form does not take the place of the documentation needed to excuse an absence. Excuses are due within 3 days of the absence.
- Early dismissal forms must be brought to the attendance before 8:30am so that your child can be given the early dismissal pass to leave class.
- The phone call you are receiving about an unexcused absence is generated by a teacher marking them absent when they take attendance. If you receive one of those phone calls and your student was at school, then proceed to PowerSchool to check which class it was for and contact that teacher with questions.
- Check out the LBHS website under the Parent Tab for detailed information and forms for early dismissal, etc.
For attendance questions ask yourself and your student these questions:
Have you checked your Parent PowerSchool account or have had your student pull up the PowerSchool app on their phone?
Have you talked to your student about why they are being marked for an unexcused absence.? Ask your student to talk to the teacher about their absences.

Safety is our Top Priority!
Student ID's
Student identification badges (IDs) are required by LBHS and CCSD for all middle and high school students and all staff. IDs are an important part of our safety plan and help us quickly identify students and make sure everyone is where they should be. IDs are also required in the media center and cafeteria as well as to be issued textbooks. Students are issued an ID at the start of the year as part of what is covered by the student fees. If a student forgets their ID or loses it, they are responsible for getting a temporary ID sticker or purchasing a new ID. Temporary ID stickers and replacement IDs are issued by LBHS staff through the attendance office. Temp IDs are assessed $1 per day and replacement IDs are $5.
Safety Drills
CCSD Random Searches
As part of the Charleston County School District safety plan and in accordance with board policy and South Carolina law, CCSD will be conducting random weapons screenings throughout the school year. The screenings will be conducted by the Search and Safety Team, which is under the CCSD Office of Security and Emergency Management. The screenings, which may include classrooms, buses, lockers, and entryways, are preventative in nature and are conducted as a deterrent in the interest of maintaining safe schools.
The selection process used for the screenings is a nonselective process conducted in accordance with a predetermined formula and witnessed by a non-security CCSD employee. Prior to the search, the places that are to be searched are randomly selected using Random.org.
If a student is found in possession of a weapon or other contraband, then the student's parent or guardian will be contacted directly by a school administrator.
More information about the random search program can be found at this link. Thank you for your support of the district's efforts to keep all of our students safe.
Sorry! No Food Delivery Services Allowed at LBHS!
Carpool Confused-A Parent Commentary
Dear Mrs. Dassing:
I am hoping to get a little clarification on what appears to have become a very complex conundrum – the morning and afternoon carpool line procedures. As with anything new, I know it takes some time to settle in, but here we are at the end of November and this is just a guess, but I am thinking our Bengal parents may need a Carpool Line refresher course. It is operating a bit like a Carpool Jungle!
I recall that during the first week of school, carpool traffic started to back up onto Mathis Ferry and so green cones appeared which divided the carpool lane into two lanes. Administrators were on hand to divert traffic into TWO lanes, which would then merge into ONE lane once you approached the school. Seemed like a smart plan to keep traffic from backing up onto Mathis Ferry Rd. Just like at Chick Fil-A, when you pull up, you select the lane that has the fewest cars so that traffic does not back up out of the parking lot. Then once you order, you are merged into one lane to pay and pick up your food (or in this case, your Bengal!). I am fairly certain everyone has been to Chick Fil A at least ONCE in their lives so I don’t believe this should be a foreign concept!
So here is the real head-scratcher! On some days, cars only line up on the right side, even though the green cones are still there. Cars may even be backed up all the way onto Mathis Ferry but no cars will go to the left lane! Why is this? Then a sharp Bengal parent pulls up, drives over to the left lane and drives around. Makes perfect sense to me. When you go to the bank, if two lanes are open, do you pick the longest line? But the problem is, once they get up to the merge, they sometimes encounter an angry Bengal parent who does some really “un-Bengal-like” things. Honking, blocking the lanes so the left lane can’t merge in and I have even heard of a few choice fingers (gasp) that have been used!! I know, definitely not Bengalesque behavior, right??
I mean, listen people, I get that there is some slight urgency in the morning - no one wants a tardy. I also understand that in the afternoons, students and parents have places to be, but where is the decorum? We really need to keep in mind that this is a carpool line. I know Bengal parents miss their little cubs (or maybe in the morning they are really desperate to separate from them for a few hours), but we have to keep this in perspective. What’s to gain by getting to the front of the building three minutes faster than someone else? It’s not like there is an 8-Count Nugget meal waiting for you. They are not giving away a coveted roll of toilet paper to the first 20 cars. We are just dropping kids off or picking them up. Really, the line goes pretty fast and a minute here or there seems like a small price to pay for some common courtesy and good will.
I, for one, would really like to complete a carpool mission and feel a sense of harmony with my fellow Mama and Papa Bengals. You know how it feels when you leave Chick Fil-A…they empower you to pay the smiles and the kindness forward! Let’s be One Team and set a good example for our Bengal cubs! So, short of having some of those kind-hearted Chick Fil-A employees whip our Carpool line into shape, maybe a sign directing traffic into two lanes (or even posting this in your Beckham Blast) would help foster some Carpool Camaraderie?
Sincerely,
Carpool Confused
