Griffin Pride Report
Weekly Communication from Our Family to Yours (2nd 9 wks)
December 18, 2020
Happy Holidays!
As we cruise into our winter break, please take note of just a couple of items:
- Exams: If your student missed an exam for any reason, whether they are virtual or in person, he/she will have the opportunity to make that up in January once we return.
- WEBEX Teams: You should have also received information from the district, but I want to remind you that as of 5:00 PM today through 7:30 AM Thurs. Jan. 7th, student WebEx Teams access will be turned off. This provides time during the holiday break for routine maintenance and upgrades to the system. Students will be able to access WebEx Teams starting 7:30 a.m. on Thurs. Jan. 7.
- Report Cards: Although today is the last day of the 9 weeks, grades will not be completed until teachers return in January, and report cards will be out on January 15.
Preparing for 3rd 9 weeks classes:
As we are having to do each 9 weeks to accommodate students moving back and forth between "In Person" and "Virtual" learning paths, we have had to add and/or change classes that our teachers are teaching. Additionally, because we are always trying to keep class sizes down and balanced, some students who have remained in the same pathway may have a schedule change. All of these changes will occur in January upon our return, so please make sure you have your student review their schedule in Skyward prior to the start of school on January 7. We know this is not ideal, but it is a necessary part of keeping the pathways open all year.
I will send reminders of all these things again in January. For now, I wish you peace, health, and happiness during this season. I intend to focus on those very things with my family as well! Who knows... maybe we will even see a snow flurry or two!

Grades:
With just one week left in the second 9 weeks grading period, it is SO important to make sure your students are caught up with all work. We have our Academic Camp tomorrow (Saturday 12/12) and Monday (12/14) after school. Please make sure your student is emailing teachers if they are missing work or need to make up assignments.
We will take semester exams next week as we finish up our first semester. Please see the schedule for Semester Exams coming up next week in the attachment below. The schedule for virtual students is slightly different than in person, so be sure you are taking note of the correct schedule.
Exams for students who are quarantined/isolated:
If your child will be in isolation/quarantine for any day of semester exams, he/she will receive instructions on taking their exams remotely from the individual teachers. If, for any reason, your child is not able to complete his/her exams this week, he/she will be provided the opportunity to take them once we return January 7, 2021.
Academic Progress:
I want to take a minute to check in with you regarding student academic progress. I know this year has been like no other with challenges we have never before faced. One constant that the Griffin staff has continued to maintain is our focus on student academic progress. Whether your students are coming to class in person, attending virtual classes, or a combination of both, we want - and expect - to see learning happening. If you are seeing that your student is still not being successful in whichever path you have chosen, please consider making a change. Students who have failed a class once, and are in danger of failing the same class for the 2nd 9 weeks, will be in danger of failing that class for the year. We cannot promote students who do not pass their classes and make progress. If you would like to visit with someone more about this, please reach out to the counselors and administrative team.
In some cases, TEA has provided direction to districts to require students to return to in person learning due to poor grades and/or attendance. If your student falls into this category, you have been sent a voice message, email, and will be receiving a letter via US MAIL. Should you disagree with this decision, you will find steps to appeal this decision in the letter/email.

- Next Steps in The Colony is looking for volunteers and families in need to sign up for their annual Christmas party that provides holiday gifts for the kids. If you are interested in either, please register online at: https://nextstepstc.org/christmas/
- Next week, December 7-11, we will be covering our fall Suicide Prevention Curriculum lesson during advisory for in-person students and during live English WebEx classes for virtual students. This lesson covers topics like stress, anxiety, depression, and thoughts of suicide. If you would rather your child not participate in the lesson, please see the attached Parent Opt Out Form below.
- You can email or call your child’s counselor if you would prefer your in-person child to go to the cafeteria for study hall during advisory instead of watching the presentation in their advisory classroom. Virtual students can also opt out of the lesson by notifying the counselors, who will let the virtual English teachers know that your child will log off of the WebEx meeting for this lesson. If you have any other questions about this presentation, please contact the counselors at bradleyj@lisd.net or colek@lisd.net
- IMPORTANT NOTE FOR VIRTUAL families only: Our social-emotional, digital citizenship, and registration lessons that are presented during advisory for in-person students are being taught through the live English WebEx classes to your students. We began this process in October and have been covering all lessons that have already been presented to in-person students. We will be all caught up and on the same schedule as in-person students for the second semester.
- PATHWAY CHANGE FOR 3rd 9 Weeks: Today, Friday, December 4th, is the last day to make pathway changes for the 3rd nine weeks by logging into your Skyward family/parent account and completing the form. The TEA has made a change that allows schools to bring students back to in-person learning that have been unsuccessful virtually. If your child falls into this category, you will be receiving notification next week that your student will be required to return to in-person learning on January 7th.
- Free/Reduced lunch application - LISD Student Services wants to remind and encourage you to complete the Free/Reduced lunch application for the 20-21 school year. Even though all students are currently provided free breakfast and lunch, there are still many advantages to being in this program. Students on the F/R Lunch program receive reduced fees for ipads, national testing, and college application fees. You can find out more about this great opportunity by clicking on the flyer below.

Veterans Day Celebration:
Wednesday, November 11, we will take some time after lunch to honor our veterans. If you or a loved one are a veteran, we encourage you to send a picture along with the years of service, rank, and relationship to our GMS family to jenningsc@lisd.net. We will add this information to our slideshow presentation Wednesday, and it will then be posted to our website and Facebook page.
COVID-19 and Quarantine:
We have seen a rise in the number of individuals on our campus with positive COVID-19 cases; however, the large majority of those cases have not come from interactions between individuals on campus. When an individual receives a positive test notification, we are diligent in reviewing where that individual had been on our campus prior to the notification, and with whom the individual was in close contact. We consider any person (with or without a mask or shield) who is within 6 feet of someone with a positive case for more than 15 minutes as being in close contact. This is the recommended measurement from the district and health officials. Unfortunately, using this measurement also means that we have a large number of students who are required to quarantine. While I understand that remote learning for many students is far from ideal, it is necessary to prevent any potential spreading of illness on our campus. I will continue to send out notifications when we receive positive cases, and we will continue to diligently review and monitor students who are in close contact. You can also help by continuing to remind your student of the importance of keeping masks on (OVER THE NOSE) and remembering to social distance while walking in the halls.
Opportunity for Pathway Change for 3rd Nine Weeks: The next opportunity to change learning pathways for your student will open just before Thanksgiving break, and remain open until the first part of December. Please remember - if you want your child to change to a different learning path for the 3rd 9 weeks, you MUST complete the form during this window of time. If you do not want any change in learning path, you do not need to complete the form.
PSAT NEXT WEEK: 8th grade students will be taking the PSAT next Tuesday/Wednesday.
We will have NO VIRTUAL PLUS 8TH GRADE ATHLETES should come to campus on the 11th due to PSAT testing.

Virtual Students Schedule Changes:
If your student is a virtual or virtual plus learner, please make sure you read the "Virtual Path Information" section below. All virtual students will be receiving a schedule change and their new schedule of classes will start Monday, October 26.
After School and Saturday Tutoring:
After school tutoring continues next Monday - Thursday from 4:35-5:40. Teachers are available to assist students as they work to improve what would have been failing 9 weeks grades from the 1st nine weeks. We will also have tutor from 9:00 AM to 11:00 AM the next two Saturdays. Please partner with us to ensure your student attends tutorials and improves his/her grades.
Grade Reports:
Report Cards posted into Skyward today; however, we received information from the district that some of the grades are not reporting correctly. Please know that we are currently in the process of reviewing all student grades and verifying their accuracy. You will be notified if one or more grades from your child's report card changes.
I also want to remind you some students will have "Incomplete" for a class rather than the grade. This is to signify that your child still has work that needs to be completed in that class before their grade can be calculated. All incompletes will be changed after the October 30.
Online book fair:
We can't hold a traditional book fair this year, so we are holding a digital one. It started Wednesday, October 21st and will wrap up on November 4th. Please use the link below to shop for yourself. You can also purchase books for a teacher's classroom by going to the GMS Library Canvas Page for details!
We will offer curbside pick up once books arrive for our virtual students!
Digital Citizenship Lessons:
As the amount of time students spend on social media, and other digital platforms, increases, so does the need for us to adequately educate them on the etiquette and laws associated with the digital world. We will begin a series of digital citizenship lessons that will take place during advisory on Tuesday, October 27. There are two letters located in the "Attachments, Links, or Notifications" section above.
Virtual Path Information
Every virtual student now has a schedule that needs to be followed exactly like it would if they were in person. This means that when looking at the schedule in Skyward, students will have WebEx meetings with the teacher listed for first period sometime during the time we have first period in school (from 8:55 - 10:20 on A days). Please keep in mind that these meetings will not be for the entire 85 minutes but rather for 15-30 minutes sometime during the period. Because virtual students still need time to complete their work through Edgenuity and/or CANVAS, we do not want to take all of their time. During the WebEx meetings, teachers will be able to check in with student understanding, notify them of late or missing work, provide supplemental information that will aid students in the online assignments, and answer any questions students may have.
I know that this is ONE MORE CHANGE both our teachers and students are having to endure; however, I also believe the benefits of this schedule greatly outweigh the burden of change. By having schedules that students follow daily:
- Teachers will be able to meet with all students at least 2 times a week (based on the A/B day schedule)
- Teachers will be able to track attendance more easily with all students meeting during their scheduled times
- Students will be able to follow the A/B schedule as it is listed on their Skyward schedule
- Students who are coming to campus for virtual plus classes will not miss core class time virtually
Skyward should have new schedules available Sunday, October 25; however, we all know that technology does not always work as predicted! If for any reason, your student is not able to access his/her new schedule by Monday morning we have a plan!
Plan in case there are issues with Skyward on Monday:
Monday will be a "B" day, so students will attend periods 2, 4, 6, and 8.
8:30 AM - check Skyward for schedule and join 2nd period class at 8:55 AM (if schedule is not available, wait until next check time)
10:30 AM - check Skyward for schedule and join 4th period class at 11:00AM (if schedule is not available, wait until next check time)
1:15 PM - check Skyward for schedule and join 6th period class at 1:40 PM (if schedule is not available, wait until next check time)
2:45 PM - check Skyard for schedule and join 8th period class at 3:10 PM - (if schedule is not available at this time email the counselors at: bradleyj@lisd.net or colek@lisd.net)
Once the student is able to access the schedule, he/she will need to email any teacher whose class you missed to let them know you now have your schedule. To make this process easier, I am attaching a google doc that lists every teacher's email address AND the link to join in his/her WebEx meeting.
Once we know Skyward has made all the changes, teachers will be sending invites to students to join regular meetings.
