#GaETC15 Sessions I Attended
THE BEST CONFERENCE IN GA! #GaETC15
Cross Curricular Literacy and Collaboration with Teaching Books.net by Warren Goetzel and Annette Smith
email, text, QR flyer, facebook, Twitter, Share-
Put the QR code lesson plans and resources on the back of books so when people check them out out they see the activities!!
Create a bulletin board of related literacy resources about a book (for example, Helen Ruffin Reading Bowl books, Dr Smith states there are quiz questions!
The literary calendar- book titles are curated around the topic of that date on the literary calendar. http://www.teachingbooks.net/Literary_Calendar.cgi?YYYY=2015&MM=11&gridType=day
Create a custom reading list for teachers- search for your topic, add the books to custom reading list and share. Just edit the title to make it meaningful and then add a date to help you remember when you did it. You will get lots of lists so name carefully. When you update, the list updates automatically.
When you order books, put the titles in that you are ordering, create a list, when the books come in, edit the list for ones that did not come in and send out list to tell people about it and then they have the resources to support the books!!!
Use the analysis tools -- you can see genre, lexile, what you do not have to make your list to be more balanced.
Literacy Connections: Balanced fiction and non fiction book lists already created--Use a pre made list by Teaching books as a starting point.
If you cannot find the resources you need for a book, use "contact us" button to make a request for that. Teaching books will contact publishers etc and get back to you in a couple of days!
If you need a vocabulary list for a book, request it from Teaching Books!
Teaching Books partners with Destiny-- With directions we can link the Teaching Books resources to Destiny. They also partner with SNAP and MackinVIA
If you want to find questions for books, click on the book and find the book guides and lessons. From there you might find questions relating to the book!
LISTS AND AWARDS- "I need a book to teach inferring" Type in the word inferring and see if there is a list of suggested titles--take the list and share it out to the teachers.
Author book readings are added weekly! More author videos to come!
Book Thief-Concept Complexity---Very high but text complexity is 2nd grade lexile--Example of NOT appropriate for 2nd graders!!!!

Mind Over Media: Analyzing Contemporary Propaganda by Renee Hobbs
This is the first year #GaETC has a library track. We are grateful that Renee Hobbs has come as our guest speaker. If anyone is not familiar with Renee, one of her books, Copyright Clarity: How Fair Use Supports Digital Learning is an awesome resource. She talks about thinking about how you or the students are transforming the work into something new. The user is encouraged to use a worksheet to the thinking and and intention of the project. She reminds us that those flyers we hand out that have limits on them such as x number of seconds for a song etc are not actually law but rather one interpretation of Fair Use. In reality, it is more complex than that and so reading this book can make an educator feel much more empowered and ready to defend themselves if questioned about their use of copyrighted material.

About today's presentation on propaganda:
Renee Hobbs has been working for two years on this website:
The GaETC site for her presos are:
http://mediaeducationlab.com/gaetc-conference-atlanta
This session is http://propaganda.mediaeducationlab.com/
Are you more powerful than propaganda??
Impetus for this project:
College students thought that propaganda was something only in Nazi Germany and did not realize it is a current issue.
PROPOGANDA
-Does not care about truth
-Is intentional
-Tries to bypass our critical thinking by activating our feelings and emotions
Mind over Media Website uses crowdsourcing for finding examples of propaganda and their evaluation of why they think it is propaganda
4 Techniques that are used to perpetuate propaganda
-activating strong emotions
-responding to audience needs and values
-simplifying ideas
-attacking opponents
Hobbs asked the audience to review the examples on http://propaganda.mediaeducationlab.com/ or just browse for examples http://propaganda.mediaeducationlab.com/browse
Use the RATE button!
This is a great activity to study propaganda, both harmful and helpful!!!
There is a "For Teachers" tab so teachers can curate examples that are of interest to the curriculum .."Create you own Gallery"
Here is the "For Teachers" Link http://propaganda.mediaeducationlab.com/teachers/ to create your own gallery-
Wow a propaganda example of a cheap T shirt kiosk that shows factory exploitation --people do not buy the shirt --
BUT Notice the INFO that is NOT presented in order to find the Point of VIew--
-Reality Check
-Values Check
-Private Gain or Public Good
-Read Between the Lines
-Solutions too Easy
-Stereotype Alert

Let the Students Lead the Way: Building a Student Innovation Team- by Jennie Magiera, CTO @MsMagiera
Let the Students Lead the Way: Building a Student Innovation Team-
Building Agency
Frequently educators say, “Yes But”… She says she has had success with all populations even young children
Structure of a Team
Student Leadership Team developed when re-writing a digital transformation plan as the CTO
Education is the only industry who does not consult with their customers (the students).
Student Innovation teams were built--
She wanted her student to be these four things:
Advocates
authors
ambassadors
advisors
Procedure:
-The kids apply to become part of the student innovation team
-Teachers apply to self select as a person who will be an early adopter
Application Process for Kids under 3rd grade
-Draw a pic of a time you were a leader
-Show a time that you helped someone solve a problem
-Draw a picture that shows what you think you will be doing in this job
-Interview-They have to explain their pictures but grades 3-5 has a normal interview.
# of kids “Hired” 1:4 or 1:6 ratio so for 30 kids, 5 or 6 on student leader team team
-They meet before during or after school
- Students on the team have different roles but they must follow 3 rules!!
Don’t touch, maybe lean forward with hands behind back (teach people how to do things, do not do it for them) and
2. Go through the steps with the people you are helping!
BE KIND! do not get frustrated with “slower” students
Student Ambassadors
The kids share the story about their experiences as empowered student so they can tell the stories that people need to hear about what’s going on in their school.
Videos created so that students can show the community that the kids can take care of the stuff..
The kids unwrapped and synced 30 Nexus 7 tablets in 3 mins..a really fun video. The students are 2nd graders so the point is even young kids can learn how to do these things and take responsibility for equipment etc
-They created a workflow to get the devices ready 3Kids made videos about the need for daily c
Of note the students were able to get the school’s curriculum changed to include coding class each day for every grade level! With all that they did, they decided to make a video to inspire other students:
A video to show your students that KIDS CAN DO ANYTHING!!!!!

InfoPics by Tony Vincent @tonyvincent
Here are the conference notes: http://learninginhand.com/infopics
What are InfoPics? Well, Tony Vincent coined this image --
They are Bing Bang Images to conveys INFO
It is text and a photo to communicate a message
Tony refers to brain research by John Medina known as:
PSE Phenom-
Picture Superiority Effect
One retains maybe around 10% without images but when pix are added -within 72 hours, 65% retention
-Images maked it more memorable--
- Images, grab our attention…
Great apps to create InfoPics
-Skitch for every platform draw on top of your pictures add words to your pix with thick contrasting color
Pic Collage but you can outsmart pic collage by rotating the pic first bc it only is vertical so this makes it horizontal.
Also a hint about your IPAD-Shake your IPAD if you do not like it crooked it
**Pizap.com---no log in needed

Adobe Color Cc Point it at objects and it will give you complimentary colors of what you are looking at in your environment. You can also upload a picture and it will pull the colors --great for interior design, it will point to the color wheel where your color is. This program seems a little random for school use but it’s very interesting if you are looking for something like thishttps://color.adobe.com/create/color-wheel/
Adobe Photoshop Fix It will help you adjust your photos !!! USE THIS!

Analyzes your voice and creates your theme music….pretty cool stuff you can change your background theme music under music….https://standout.adobe.com/voice/
The one thing to know is that you must post to adobe website!!! I am thinking maybe do a screencast to get the product and post it anyplace?
Adobe Slate Allows you to create multimedia interactive websites available on IOS and now the pages sync from IPAD to web and vice versa. I thought this was nice but with all of the other options for web pages, I would not stop using other resources to try it out. https://standout.adobe.com/slate/
