Math, Science, and Social Studies
We will continue working on our 9 facts in math fluency this week. This is where students begin to have more difficulty so please make sure they are working on these facts at home. Continue to work with your child on their math facts each night. The fact cards are in your child's pencil pouch. Also, continue to work on all previous facts: 1's through 6's and 10's. We will have our accuracy check on the 9 facts this Friday.
Science-What a great week we had last week in Science! Our Pumpkin Catapult Olympics was a huge success. Students had a great time using their catapults to conquer distance, hit a target, jump 20 books, topple a cup tower, score a bucket, and hoop shoot through a hula hoop. Students learned how to make adjustments to control potential and kinetic energy to help be successful at each event. We had so much fun! This week we will complete Ballooning Spiders. On Monday we will finish making our parachutes and test the drag of our designs. Later this week we will begin "The Secrets of Flight" unit.
Reading, Writing, and Word Study
Reading--We have taken off on our 10-day Mission to Mars! We will be exploring non-fiction structures and text features this week. We will also be working on determining importance in reading.
Reminder--all students are expected to have a "grade appropriate" book to read in class every day. (This means a chapter book or a longer non-fiction selection--not Where's Waldo or a joke book). We do classroom library check in and out each Tuesday and Friday, and each class has a weekly trip to the school library.
Writing--Students will be taking a diagnostic grammar assessment using www.noredink.com. In addition, we will be doing a practice writing prompt this week. We will score our prompts and look at changes to make to improve scores. We will wrap up the week with Power Writing and Foghorn Writing.
