K-2 Socratic Seminar Training
Critical Thinking, Close Reading and Dynamic Dialogues

Lakeville Area Schools presents a one day workshop on how to use Socratic Seminars with K-2 students. This workshop gives participants hands-on practice and skills to take back to the classroom. Socratic Seminars help students develop critical and creative thinking skills and a deep understanding of complex ideas. Learn to facilitate high-level student discussions through rigorous and thoughtful dialogue, including ways to integrate Seminar with Benchmark Literacy resources.
The Power of a Socratic Seminar in the Classroom!
Participants will:
Participate in and reflect upon Socratic Seminars
Create opening questions that spark student conversation and thoughtfulness
Learn the knowledge and skill of selecting engaging complex texts to address any content area
Receive engaging seminar texts to take back to the classroom
Gain an understanding how MN ELA Academic Standards align and support Socratic Seminar
Integrate Benchmark Literacy resources within the Socratic Seminar model
Students will learn to:
Solve problems
Think conceptually
Work collaboratively
Listen and articulate coherently
Workshop Details
Participants need to plan on a full day of participation. Preparatory reading of student-based text will be required. Seating is limited. There will be a waiting list once we reach 25 participants. Recommended for educators who work with or support grades K, 1, and 2. Preference will be given to grade levels PLC's that register as a team. Registration and sub costs will be covered by Teaching & Learning and Gifted Education.
