Fernwood Avenue Middle School

Weekly Newsletter

WEEK OF SEPTEMBER 11, 2022

PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE

Fernwood Avenue Middle School will be administering the state mandated Start Strong assessment beginning on Wednesday, September 21, 2022. The Start Strong assessment is a computer-based assessment (45-60 minutes each unit) that measures student academic performance level of prior grade year standards in ELA and Mathematics. Students in Grades 6-8 will be assessed in one unit of ELA and one unit of Math. 6th Grade students will also be assessed in one unit of Science. The Start Strong assessment will provide quick feedback to teachers, identify student areas of academic strength, and pinpoint areas where additional support may be needed.

We strongly encourage all of our students to attend school during this testing time. Also, students are required to have their Chromebooks with them on testing days. They should be fully charged the night before. Please refer to the following test dates for Fernwood Avenue Middle School:

All Grades ELA & Mathematics - September 21, 2022 (Abbreviated day for students with dismissal at 12:45 pm)

6th Grade Science - September 22, 2022

Please feel free to contact your child’s school counselor or visit https://nj.mypearsonsupport.com/ForParent/ if you have any questions pertaining to the Start Strong assessment.

Patriot Day

Mr. Medica and Mrs. Berry's classes used Monday, 09/12/22, to learn about and understand the significance of Patriot Day; the day America remembers the tragic events of 09/11/01. Through class discussions and the viewing of an educational video, the students were taught about the importance of the day and a basic understanding of the events that occurred. Finally, and most importantly, they learned how everyday citizens of The United States of America united to help one another and fight back against terrorism around the world.

Team Approach

Mr. Komack's classes are kicking off the school year with some team building activities! Students had to build the biggest tower out of marshmallows and tooth picks working as a group!

Plastic Cup Tower

Gold team students had a lot of fun building the tallest tower with plastic cups in science class! They learned you need a firm foundation to build on.

Work Together

Mrs. Wenzel's students have been participating in many fun back-to-school activities, especially ones where they are learning how to successfully collaborate and work together as a team. They competed in a paper chain challenge, where the longest paper chain was made by Sophia Christakos, Ava McCaffrey, and Matt Gamil. Then they raced against the clock to find the numbers in a 100 number challenge. It's been a great way to start the school year!

Scientific Method

Students in Mr. Zompa's science class learned more about each other through the scientific method. Students made a Bioglyph with symbols that represent their life, and then tried to figure out who each one belonged to by asking yes or no questions.
