4th Grade News
Week of October 17th
Field Trip
This Friday, the fourth grade students and their teachers will travel to see the JPAS performance of Seussical! Our own James Favor will be taking the stage to show us his talents, and we are excited to cheer him on! After the performance we will head to Lafreniere Park to engage in some team building activities and eat a picnic lunch. If your child buys a school lunch, they will be provided with a sack lunch to bring along. If you provide your child with a lunch from home normally, please do so. Please do not send any items that would need to be heated up as we will be outside and will not have access to a microwave. On Friday, we announced to the students what play we will be performing and they were all quite excited! More details regarding the play will be coming out in a few weeks.

Dress Down Day!
On Friday, October 21st, students that bring in $2.00 may wear casual clothes to school. This dress down day will benefit the local non-profits NOLA Tree Projectand Audubon Institute's Nature Center. We are once again partnering with these excellent organizations to raise money to replant some of the 100,000 trees lost in the 2005 hurricane season. The money raised will be used to purchase trees to be planted by our 7th grade volunteers on November 12th at the Audubon Institute's Nature Center which is being rebuilt in New Orleans East. Thanks for supporting this very worthwhile community cause and helping to rebuild New Orleans, one tree at a time.
Party Time!
October 30th at 11:30 we will be having a spooktacular party, it should be a monster of a time! With that said, we need your help! We need volunteers to help set up, man stations at the party, and clean up. Please consider volunteering in our classroom from 11:30-1:00 p.m. Our wonderful room moms will be sending out information soon.
Read!
Please make sure your children are reading at home and filling out their Independent Reading Logs! The log is a homework assignment and must be turned in each Monday.
Watch the video of the above title I Need My Monster with your child and ask them some who, what, where, when, and why questions regarding the text. The kids will love this story!
Oral Book Report
This week we will be talking to our classes about the Oral Book Report. The OBR will be presented in class the week of December 12th. Students will go over the directions with their teachers and a handout will be given to them to bring home along with a rubric showing you how we will be grading them. Please help your child choose a book to start reading for this project.
Social Studies
We have continued our geography studies in Social Studies. Miss. Kenny's homeroom just finished a study of using lines of longitutde and latitude to locate the seven continents on a world map. Students created their own world maps, drawing the lines of longitude and latitude. Once they finished that, we learned about different types of maps including World Population Maps, World Economic Maps, Physical World Maps, and World Political Maps, from which they used to create their own. Now we are studying U.S. landforms. Mrs. Sontag's homeroom also completed their map skills lesson creating 3D globes. They are learning about various landforms and creating landform posters to go along with their studies. An in depth discussion of the Mississppi river led the class to a brief study of rivers around the world.
Have a great week!
Mrs. Sontag, Miss Kenny, Mrs. McConnell, Mrs. Armstrong, and Mrs. Dunn.
